By James Bishop, Jr.(December 5, 2018)“Ravens are the birds I’ll miss most when I die. If only the darkness into which we must look were composed of the black light of their limber intelligence. If only we did not have to die at all. Instead, become ravens.”― Louise Erdrich, The Painted DrumFrom time to time, the skies above Sedona can be busy with ravens and helicopters. As the New Year looms, the truth must be faced: citizens likely know more about helicopters than they do about ravens even though ravens have been around as long as time itself and are much more…
By Ted Grussing… this crow came in for a landing in one of the pine trees on the tee box behind our home a few weeks go and it was pretty neat getting the full head on view as he was braking, gear down and ready to grip the branch to absorb the shock and decelerate to a state of rest in a fraction of a second. Shot with my trusty Canon 1D-X and the 100/400mm lens. You can see the intense concentration as he focuses on the branch and is giving it full flaps and spoilers to drain the energy…

By Ted Grussing… beauty in the woods of Northern Wisconsin get my attention even more than the wild colorful views favored by landscape photographers from certain high vantage points or along the highways that crisscross the state. I do enjoy getting those shots, but there is nothing like that one singular tree, nestled and hidden away from view of all but a few who know where they are lurking. This is a tree I shot in September from a boat in Smith Lake, which is accessed by a channel between the Upper Eau Clair and Smith Lake. Not many cabins…
