By Ted GrussingI took this shot from Seventeen Mile Road in Pebble Beach looking back towards Pacific Grove to get a view of the enormous peaks and valleys created by the swells coming in and creating these huge waves. Swooping down from the peak to center right edge is the upper edge of the wave still rising and then adding to the…

By Ted Grussing… large swells coming across the ocean reach shallow water and that forces the water upwards creating huge waves that come rolling in. On Saturday the waves were supposed to be in the forty-foot range at Mavericks and surf warnings were issued for numerous parts of the northern California coast including where I took this shot. The wave was not super big, but probably around twelve feet … it was beautiful spending time just looking at these massive waves rise up, curl over and come crashing down.

By Ted Grussing… there is more than one way to surf and the Pelicans are among the best when it comes to running ridge lift on the face of waves as the air is pushed forward and up, they park themselves in the beautiful band of lift and cruise making gentle control movements with their wings and primary feathers to maintain lift and control. I got this shot on Friday somewhere along the coast south of Half Moon Bay … around Pigeon Point Lighthouse I think.
