By Ted Grussing… in the Painted Desert, a few miles SSW of Grand Falls is Roden Crater, the art project of James Turrell. Turrell bought the crater back in the 1970’s and has been working on the project ever since. He reshaped the cinder cone of the ancient cinder cone and has from what I hear, the art project will be open to the public within a few years. Sedona AZ (June 11, 2019) – The parking lot, playgrounds, splash pad and grass area of Sunset Park will be closed Monday, June 17, to allow the city to plant new shade trees. Tennis players may still use the courts but will have to walk in from Shelby Drive. The park is expected to reopen June 18, subject to change if work cannot be completed as planned. By Ted Grussing… soon the bobcat will return to this part of his territory as there is now an abundance of rabbits and squirrels … two of his favorite dietary pleasures. The cottontail rabbit is capable of sustained speeds up to 30 mph and occasionally 35 mph … the bobcat can attain 30 mph in short bursts. The numbers are pretty even, but if the cottontail can sustain a 30+ mph speed for a distance he might elude being a meal for the bobcat … at least in the short term. So I fancy that this cottontail is building up…

Sedona AZ (June 7, 2019) – Highway 179, south of Sedona, was closed for short period Thursday morning as Sedona Fire District (SFD) and United States Forest Service (USFS) crews battled a series of fires along the road. During the morning of June 6th SFD, Sedona Police Department and USFS responded to five separate wildland fires along the North and South Bound sides of Hwy 179. The Coldwater Fire was started by lightning on May 30th and the USFS is conducting burnouts to stop the spread. Not sure if they are managing the fire which means they are expanding the size of the fire or if they are simply suppressing the fire which is more than likely what they are doing with this one.
