I went up there to get some better shots of the Lowell Observatory Anderson Mesa Campus to go with some narrative from a friend who was with Lowell for about forty years. By Ted Grussing… earths answer to sunrise or sunset is contained within a beautiful package of amorphous hydrated silica otherwise know as opal. This is a piece of black crystal opal I began working on this morning; the upper edge has been nipped to show the color which is also burning through the skin of the opal beneath the nip. I’m thinking that this is an absolute gem. I took the shot this morning before I started working the stone and about two hours into it, it is a mind blowing piece of black crystal opal.

By Ted Grussing… one definition of a weed that I have heard is that it is a plant whose purpose has yet to be discovered … another that it is a plant located in a place it is not wanted. So here is one of my favorite weeds, but it has many uses including saving lives. During WWII kids were encouraged to collect milk weed and send it to collection centers to be processed and used as the filling in life vests. It was much lighter and buoyant than cork or kapok which were also used … millions of pounds…
