Mormon Lake Basin Project: 326 acres of large piles located approximately 35 miles south of Flagstaff, south of the Village of Mormon Lake, and west of Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road). Sedona AZ (January 9, 2012) – The City Council has appropriated $4,000 in fiscal year 2011-12 to implement the sixth year of the Historic Preservation Commission Small Grant Program.  These competitive grants will be given to the owners of a designated local landmark property or a structure or site eligible to be a landmark that has been identified in the City’s Historic Resource Survey. Sedona AZ (January 9, 2012) – Sedona resident and author Anne Crosman will launch her latest book THE NEW IMMIGRANTS: AMERICAN SUCCESS STORIES Wednesday, January 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Sedona Public Library. Anne has invited Itzhak Magal, one of the immigrants in her book, to join her, along with other Sedona residents Dr. Nick Paslidis, Bette and Venkat Venkateswaran, Penny Mathieu, Ursula Gore, Grace Gedlek, and Andre Renard. They will relate their immigrant experiences, and answer questions from the audience.

Verde Valley AZ (January 9, 2012) – MATFORCE is seeking entries in its annual “My Voice Makes a Difference” Youth Video Contest.   Area youth ages 11 to 18 are invited to let their voices be heard by creating a video depicting how their voice makes a positive difference in helping to reduce drug and alcohol abuse. Youth can create a 15 to 30 second commercial announcement or a 1 to 2 minute video.  Winners will be chosen from two age categories:  middle school and high school.  Previous year’s winning entries can be viewed online on the Youth tab at matforce.org.

Verde Valley AZ (January 6, 2012) – Verde Valley Land Preservation will hold its annual meeting on Monday January 16th at the Cottonwood Recreation Center at 2pm. Accomplishments for 2011 include completion and distribution of the Overlay Model planning tool, which graphically illustrates areas with open space values. Also, numerous contacts were made with property owners to begin conversations about land conservation options. At this meeting goals promoting our mission of preserving and enhancing Verde Valley open space will be formed and officers elected.  Members and the public are invited to attend.

Two of the positions are to fill terms ending November 30, 2014; one position is for a six-month period to fill a term ending November 30, 2012. Flagstaff AZ (January 5, 2012) – Pending favorable conditions, fire managers plan to burn 10 acres of piles on the Kachina Project tomorrow, Friday January 6. Piles are located south of Kachina Village, approximately 2 miles west of I-17 at the Kelly Canyon interchange. The majority of smoke will disperse to the northeast with the forecast winds, however, some smoke may follow terrain and settle into Oak Creek Canyon overnight. Prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including winds and ventilation, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

Cottonwood AZ (January 5, 2012) – On Friday, January 13th at 7:30 PM HuDost will bring their exploratory sound to the Old Town Center for the Arts. The music of HuDost, the Neo Folk World Rock Ensemble from Montreal and NY, weaves a seamless tapestry of sound that renders tears and laughter in listeners.
