Flagstaff AZ (February 13, 2012) – Fire managers are planning to conduct prescribed pile burns on the Oak Creek Canyon and Eastside project tomorrow February 14, pending favorable conditions. Oak Creek Canyon Project – Approximately 37 acres of piles located north of Sedona in Oak Creek Canyon. Piles mostly consist of light brush that will burn quickly, leaving little residual smoke. During the day, smoke will rise up and out of Oak Creek Canyon. Some smoke may drift down canyon and noticeable in the Forest Houses area overnight.

Cottonwood AZ (February 13, 2012) – Beginning in March, Park Rangers at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood will offer guided ranger-led hikes on Sundays and mountain bike ride/clinics on Saturdays. The hikes will be charged as part of the $7 park car entrance fee, however the mountain bike clinic/rides require an additional program fee of $5.00 per person.

Justice Department Has 60 Days to Accept, Reject or Request More Information Phoenix AZ (February 10, 2012)  – The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission has sent its congressional-district map for Justice Department review. Because Arizona is subject to Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act, the commission is seeking “preclearance” from Washington for the map to be used in this fall’s elections. The Justice Department has 60 calendar days to respond, starting the first full day after it receives a submission. The response could be approval, rejection or a request for additional information.

Cottonwood AZ (February 9, 2012) – Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer, will perform a special Centennial Concert at Old Town Center for the Arts on Friday, February 17th at 7:30 PM.  This concert will be the third in a series of ‘Centennial Events’ hosted by OTCA, and is sponsored by the historic Cottonwood Hotel. Camp Verde AZ (February 9, 2012) – The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office routinely “employs” inmates housed at the Camp Verde Detention Center for duties in and outside the Detention Center. Recently a crew of inmates was assigned to litter and trash pick-up along a one mile stretch of Highway 260 in Camp Verde. This section of highway has been adopted by the Sheriff’s Office as part of ADOT’s “Adopt a Highway” program. On this particular day, inmates picked up 26 bags of litter from both sides of the highway.

Sedona AZ (February 9, 2012) – Sedona’s Studio Live hosts a poetry slam Saturday, Feb. 18, starting at 7:30 p.m. featuring longtime Phoenix poet Aaron Johnson and hosted by Sedona poet Christopher Fox Graham. All poets are welcome to compete for the $100 grand prize. The prize is funded in part by a donation from Verde Valley poetry supporter Jeanne Freeland.
