The closure area includes Fossil Creek, Fossil Springs, Childs and the entire Fossil and Hackberry Mountain area, which borders sections of the Verde River and state Route 260. Cornville AZ (June 4, 2014) – On May 28, 2014, around 7:30 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 9400 block of E. Cornville Road, Cornville, regarding a disorderly customer. Dispatchers were told about a man, later identified as 46-year-old Robert Burch from Cottonwood, who was pounding on the locked front door trying to get inside. Burch had been in the restaurant earlier complaining about his food. After serving another meal of his choice, Burch consumed the food and then left without paying. The staff and some customers believed Burch was drunk.

This improved performance meant 14.9% of children receiving free and reduced-price lunches during the school year also received SFSP meals in 2013, ranking Arizona 24th in the country and comparing favorably to the national average of 15.1%. It also continues a steady string of SFSP participation improvement for Arizona, which ranked as one of the worst states in the country just five years ago.

Cottonwood AZ (June 3, 2014) – Just before 11PM on May 28, 2014, deputies were dispatched to an assault in the 4500 block of E Silver Leaf Trail, Cottonwood. Deputies found a 21-year-old male victim with a serious head injury covered in blood. EMS personnel treated the victim as he explained that 48-year-old Randy Stewart assaulted him with a “machete” after the victim declined to purchase a vehicle from Stewart. I highly commend the agency’s Slide wildfire response. It is miraculous that much of Oak Creek Canyon was saved. My goal is to make the agency a) more effective in preventing devastating wildfires in the future, and b) more transparent and accountable to the public for their actions and, more specifically, for their inactions.
