I’ve read that the top 1% of Americans controls more wealth than the remaining 99%. That’s plain wrong. Things need to change. By Mel Copen Sedona AZ (October 2, 2011) – These days, many Americans have lapsed into a feeling of despondency, helplessness and pessimism toward the future. This is a great nation, and all the ingredients for continued greatness are still here. But many challenges and lack of faith in the government to deal with them, both domestically and abroad have, for many, eroded faith in the future. Some of the important elements include: the need to generate job opportunities, the weakness of the housing market, the inability to obtain loans, the crazy gyrations on Wall Street, the growing gap between the…

A Sharing with Barbara Mayer Sedona AZ (October 16, 2011) –  People from all over the world visit Sedona to experience various forms of healing, yet in this month of October it is the City of Sedona herself which needs a very immediate and very gentle yet powerful form of healing. The Proposition 410 Referendum which will come up for a vote when Sedona voters receive their ballots around Oct. 18 — and need to fill in and mail prior to Nov. 8 – has caused a tremendous split in our city’s very fabric. While many feel this referendum is…

Huge Land Grab Looming? Men argue, nature acts. –Voltaire, 1764 By James Bishop, Jr.  Sedona, AZ (September 30, 2011) – Hail the withering tomato plant vine. Let those who make those green tomato pickles gather green tomatoes in the uptown garden where the corn stands stripped and the beans are quivering in the wind, the death rattle in their pods. Time to put away the hoe; let frost have its way. Even the squash have given up. For the gardener and the garden, now is the time to rest and dream of spring. “Let’s permit her to have her way,”…

Sedona City Talk By Councilor Mark DiNunzio Sedona AZ (September 27, 2011) – As I listened to a lecture about the vital importance of healthy, active citizen civic involvement at a conference of cities and towns recently, I found myself remembering a lesson that Jack Kornfield is fond of sharing through a parable. It seems an appropriate reminder for us a decade after the terror and trauma of 9/11 and as we face the upcoming votes on SR 89A referendum and initiative.

Undecided on 410 Sedona, AZ (September 27, 2011) Dear Editor, I can’t decide between the lesser of two evils. If I vote for ADOT to maintain control of 89A, then it will likely put up a string of streetlights that will make West Sedona look like some airstrip. Some pilots might get confused and try to land on 89A. The only plus about this choice is that my taxes won’t skyrocket in the long run. My state income tax will continue to finance all ADOT construction regardless of our vote. What if the city takes control and has to maintain…
