Verde Valley AZ (June 13, 2019) – UPDATE – During an operation in Glendale Arizona, members of The Arizona Division of United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force were able to locate and apprehend Fugitive Seth Backus.  Backus was arrested in the late morning hours of June 12th in the area of 61st avenue and Olive in Glendale and was taken into custody without incident.  Backus will now not only face the repercussions of his probation violation warrant, but several other charges he has accumulated while he was on the run.  This is another example of the great job our…

By Ted Grussing… when I took off this morning the smoke was pretty intense, so I pointed the nose up and to the north. I went above the smoke layers around 13,000’ and kept climbing. As far as I could see in any direction there was a layer of smoke and numerous burn sites were visible … at least 10,000 square miles were blanketed with the stuff.

By Ted Grussing… in the Painted Desert, a few miles SSW of Grand Falls is Roden Crater, the art project of James Turrell. Turrell bought the crater back in the 1970’s and has been working on the project ever since. He reshaped the cinder cone of the ancient cinder cone and has from what I hear, the art project will be open to the public within a few years. Sedona AZ (June 11, 2019) – The parking lot, playgrounds, splash pad and grass area of Sunset Park will be closed Monday, June 17, to allow the city to plant new shade trees. Tennis players may still use the courts but will have to walk in from Shelby Drive. By Ted Grussing… soon the bobcat will return to this part of his territory as there is now an abundance of rabbits and squirrels … two of his favorite dietary pleasures. The cottontail rabbit is capable of sustained speeds up to 30 mph and occasionally 35 mph … the bobcat can attain 30 mph in short bursts. The numbers are pretty even, but if the cottontail can sustain a 30+ mph speed for a distance he might elude being a meal for the bobcat … at least in the short term. So I fancy that this cottontail is building up…

Sedona AZ (June 7, 2019) – Highway 179, south of Sedona, was closed for short period Thursday morning as Sedona Fire District (SFD) and United States Forest Service (USFS) crews battled a series of fires along the road.  During the morning of June 6th SFD, Sedona Police Department and USFS responded to five separate wildland fires along the North and South Bound sides of Hwy 179.  The fires started along the southbound lanes shortly before 11:00 a.m. and another series of fires were reported about an hour later on the northbound lanes.  “Our ability to rapidly extinguish these fires is due…
