Darleene completed her BFA from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she studied painting. She has always been inspired by nature, which is something she observes, collects, photographs, sketches and journals. By Henry Twombly, Sedona Resident(July 12, 2014) I found that last month’s Community Connection incited a range of reactions within me from the petty to the profound. My most petty observation was that the City could have saved money by a simple black-and-white print job on regular stock paper. As petty as this is, it is symbolic of the City’s attitude and lax oversight of its expenditures – expressing the grandiose for a sophisticated image rather than the frugal for fiscal responsibility. When I noticed the Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube icons on the back page, I wondered how many people really…

Sedona AZ (July 11, 2014) – “My name is Bootsie! I am super handsome and affectionate. I love to play with toys, and snuggle up, too! I am FIV+ so I need an FIV+ household, or to be an only cat. Do you have a special heart, for a special kitty?” Bootsie is a 3 year old Tuxedo neutered male. Although he is FIV+ and needs to be your only cat or live with other FIV+ cats, he is happy and healthy. Many cats with FIV live long lives. In itself, FIV is not serious but it does weaken a…

By Ted Grussing … and on the way home yesterday I diverted, digressed, descended and disassembled … and flew back to Sunset Crater. The colors, clouds and natural beauty of the terrain were spellbinding and here is what I saw … earths changes immortalized … at least for now and in hundreds of thousands of years another person may find this beauty, but altered by the forces of nature … new volcanoes … new forests … new deserts … but all flowing naturally from today … and then tomorrow is today and the future the present.

By Virginia Volkman, Library Director Sedona AZ (July 11, 2014) – I went to the American Library Association Conference with a question on my mind: What does the future hold for public libraries? Will they rise to the recent USA Today headline challenge, “Libraries’ choice: Change or die.” I came away with an answer: Yes, libraries are alive and well.
A New Mantra For Our Time By Barbara Mayer(July 11, 2014) If we are to make a personal testament about ourselves, our beliefs, and how we want our lives to matter, one of our most basic thoughts would include the reality that we are not here alone. We belong. Our personal analysis of how we belong depends on our psychological and spiritual maturity, as the ego of its nature demands attention and approval. An integral part of being human, however, is that our very identity rises from the fact we are part of something where, for better or worse, we…
Sedona AZ (July 10, 2014) – Yesterday, July 9, 2014, at approximately 10:50 AM, two teen girls, ages 14 and 15, were walking west on Cortez Drive from the Giant Gas Station towards Slide Rock Road, Village of Oak Creek, when a man drove by and whistled at them. The man then completed a U-turn, pulled up to the teens on the wrong side of the road and told them they had “nice butts.” He also asked if they would get in his car and “hang out” with him. The girls told him “no,” ran off, and hid. The girls…
By Ted Grussing … there are few places on our little planet that have the forever views of the southwestern area of the USA, and there is no place on earth that has more geology on the surface than northern Arizona. I wish I knew as much as my geologist friend that fly with me and I could identify all the various layers of the formations you can see in this photo which date back millions of years. I can tell you that you have never seen a photo like this one which I took yesterday morning when I took…
