By Ted Grussing … there was still a lot of smoke, but as I flew up the canyon it was looking lighter and the smoke plumes/level seemed to be well below 10,000’ msl; I was about 12,000’ msl  and directly over West Fork and other areas of the canyon. After spending about 45 minutes overhead shooting the scene I headed down to Falcon Field in Mesa to complete the annual on the Lambada and expected to see substantial improvement when I flew back to Sedona. Instead I saw pyro cumulus clouds going to well over 15,000’ and raging fires along…

By Ted Grussing Ashes to ashes, dust to dust … just as we return the remains of those we love to the earth and they once again become part of all that is, so too we are seeing the remains of a beautiful forest being scattered across the landscape, flowing across the landscape and then returning to the earth from which it came.  This is a shot which I took just a few seconds after takeoff this morning … probably not more than five or six hundred feet above the airport which is now behind me … perhaps 5400’ msl.…

By Dr. Marta AdelsmanLife Coach in Communication and Consciousnesswww.DrMartaCoach.com(May 23, 2014) By the time we get to our 50s and beyond, we’ve put a lot of years into practicing communication habits that don’t serve us.  The longer we practice these habits, the more ingrained they become.  I indulged in one the other day. “You’re not paying enough attention to me!” I said to my husband, Steve.  “You seem pre-occupied with getting ready for the tour you’re leading to Japan; you’re always somewhere else in your mind.  I’d like you to spend at least a little quality time with me before…

By Ted Grussing On Tuesday [May 20, 2014] at about 4PM near Slide Rock Park in Oak Creek Canyon a fire was started by what is said to be a camp fire. Within minutes the fire had engulfed 20 acres; in a few hours it reached 400 plus acres and within a day consumed more than 4500 acres and it is still going. The fire has also spread into and appears to have destroyed the West Fork area of Oak Creek … this was one of the most beautiful trails in the entire Sedona area.

By Sedona Fire Chief Kris Kazian Today, our community woke up to a blanket of smoke covering the area. This is due to the shift of winds and a weather inversion. We expect this condition to lift out of the area by late morning and have a likelihood of continuing to follow this same pattern for the next week or two. We want to be clear – the fire has not gotten any closer to the City of Sedona or Village of Oak Creek, as it continues to burn in a northern direction. At this time, the fire is anchored at…

By Ted Grussing … with two photos so far this week … might as well keep it going. I took this shot of Cathedral Rock last week late afternoon and like the way it presents from this altitude and bank angle. The contoured and cracked rock formations leading up and to the right are actually heading SE towards the Village where we live. Kinda looks like an internal amphitheater spilling out of the rock formation …

By Ted Grussing … from Munds Park, looking SSW. The canyon in the foreground working its way from lower left to middle right is Munds Canyon and that is where it joins Oak Creek Canyon which is partially visible and it goes up the canyon to the right and wends its way down the canyon and to the east along the base of the Sedona Airport Mesa near the upper center of the image.

By Ted Grussing With the winds continuing unabated nearly every day I decided to do an early morning flight and be back on the ground before it started blowing.  It was overcast, but amazingly beautiful and a new way of looking at things; hard to call this a dinner bell after a view like his. In the foreground is a trail goes several miles towards town and also a parking lot off SR 179.

By Ruth Wicks(May 18, 2014) At the Yavapai College District Board meeting yesterday, Dr. Clint Ewell did just that. He worked diligently with the county treasurer to calculate the taxes raised here in the valley for the college.  After a rigorous examination, the total was well over 12 million dollars.  The present annual cost of running the two Verde Valley campuses, in Clarkdale and Sedona, is slightly over 7 million dollars.  Therefore our desire for a Verde Valley Community College is realistic and attainable.

By Ted Grussing SWEET!!!!  Did some flying late afternoon with friends and although there was a fair amount of dust and pollen in the air, by keeping the sun on our backs, so to speak, and staying relatively low right in the stuff the effects of it are greatly diminished and you get a clarity you do not see from a higher altitude. The stuff is still there, but it becomes more or less transparent.

By Warren Woodward, Sedona Resident(May 17, 2014) Industry mouthpiece SmartGridNews finally admitted today that “smart” meters are surveillance devices. Of course they didn’t quite put it that bluntly. In fact, they celebrate the ability of utilities to know what appliances people use as another tool to help craft the wonderful world of the future.
