By Gary Krupa, CPA(January 15, 2013)  Kala Pearson is a resident of McGuireville, Arizona. On December 20, 2012, she was arrested for the theft of $33,000 from the Beaver Creek Village Property Owners Association (BCVPOA), and charged with extortion. Reportedly, she admitted to the theft.* Kala had been the organization’s Secretary. By Tom O’HalleranChairman- Verde River Basin Partnership Verde Valley AZ (January 11, 2013) – The renowned automobile executive and industrialist Henry Ford once stated: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” The Verde River Basin Partnership’s Coordinating Committee (Partnership’s Board of Directors) strongly believes that our region’s leaders should adhere to Ford’s advice as they deliberate over the future of the Yavapai County Water Advisory Committee (WAC). The Coordinating Committee maintains that the WAC is an essential element in our region’s search for solutions regarding our future water resources and economic viability. The WAC…

By Dr. Marta AdelsmanLife Coach in Communication and Consciousnesswww.DrMartaCoach.com (January 11, 2012)  I awoke on that Saturday morning filled with intense anxiety that bordered on panic.  We hadn’t yet lived in the Verde Valley for a year, and we were experiencing a tough time financially.  My mind projected a future in which we had lost our house and a whole lot of other things.  All weekend I threw blame and lashed out (my poor husband!).

By Henry Twombly, Sedona Resident(January 4, 2013) Wed to a pro-growth agenda that subsidizes developers, consultants and the construction industry, the City Council is out of touch with us taxpayers. The mayor recently stated that streetlights were a highlight of 2012, though a majority of residents opposed them and voted out three council members who supported them in 2010. The vice mayor said, “maintaining our budget and financial management needs to be consistent in being fiscally conservative,” though this year Sedona was ranked the sixth highest city in per capita debt at $5,261.17. Another highlight of 2012?

By Andrea Houchard(January 2, 2013) The New Year is a celebration of time that each of us adds to our lives. It is a time to reflect on how we live, but that is something that Sedona people do anyway. For the most part, people in Sedona have made a conscious choice about where and how to live, and recognize the relationship between the two. A new year brings new plans to a community of creative, mindful people. This is the time of year when we think of renewal and new possibility, so the topic of death might seem like…

By Elaine Brown, Village of Oak Creek(December 29, 2012)  FDR was, of course, a consummate political leader. In one situation, a group came to him urging specific actions in support of a cause in which they deeply believed. He replied: “I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it.”

By Dr. Marta AdelsmanLife Coach in Communication and Consciousnesswww.DrMartaCoach.com (December 28, 2012)  Each day you get up to go to work or take care of the kids or assume other responsibilities in your community.  And each day you may be carrying out your responsibilities wearing a costume.  Costumes come in a variety of styles and colors.  There’s the one labeled “ambition.”  Others have names like “fear,” “agendas,” “opinions,” or “hurts.”  Over time, they combine to form belief systems that solidify into patterns of behavior — roles you play without being aware that they are roles.  Without this awareness, you believe the…

By Ernie Strauch, Sedona Resident(December 26, 2012) Wayne LaPierre, representing the NRA leadership, has a strange vision for the future of America, “land of the (theoretically) free, and home of the (not so politically) brave”. First decrying the declaration of “gun-free zones” as an enticement to the evil monsters in our society, the solution is proposed as armed guards in every school in America. Practical? My high school had 3 buildings of 2 stories each. How many armed guards would he propose? Would it be true that the only way to stop a bad guy with an AR15, is a…

It is Time for Us to Come Together Again By Sedona City Councilor Dan McIlroy Sedona AZ (December 24, 2012) – Now that the election is over, and the Christmas season is upon us, and as we look forward to the New Year, it is time for us to come together again as one people who love this city, state and nation. After Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the American people rallied as one and supported the war effort. When the twin towers fell in New York on September 11, 2001, we became one people again. Now we are…

By Zachary RichardsonSedona Oak Creek School District Governing Board Member “… a third grade teacher read a story to her students as they huddled in the corner during the shooting.” I cannot get that vision of mayhem during the assault on the Newtown Connecticut elementary school out of my head. I served 20 years in the military spending untold numbers of hours training how to react under fire. No matter the amount of training, the situation is chaotic and terrifying as one’s reaction is impulsive. It was not training that taught that third grade teacher to calm her class, or…
