logo_ksbSedona AZ (December 2, 2014) – Nationally renowned photographer Derek von Briesen will present a musically choreographed slideshow of Sedona’s wondrous scenery as seen throughout the seasons at Keep Sedona Beautiful’s monthly Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series on Wednesday, December 10th.  As is customary, KSB will hold an abbreviated annual meeting prior to the presentation.

The evening will feature the unique opportunity to purchase the first signed print in a series of 50 first edition prints of “Cathedral Sunset” donated to KSB by Derek von Briesen.  This stunning print is from Derek’s personal collection and has been designated one of 100 Greatest Photographs ever to appear in Arizona Highways and is a multi-layer dye sublimation print on high gloss white aluminum.

The annual meeting and potluck supper will take place between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.  Thereafter, von Briesen will begin his slide show and commentary which will be accompanied by a variety of selected instrumental music chosen to enhance the seasonal ambiance of his presentation.  Complimentary offerings of appetizers donated by El Rincon Restaurante and a potluck supper provided by KSB board trustees will be offered.  To celebrate the spirit of giving this holiday season, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items which Keep Sedona Beautiful will merrily deliver to the Sedona Food Bank.

Von Briesen’s stunning photographs – from the smallest details to the most expansive, awe-inspiring vistas – will touch your soul as they take you into the mysterious heart of Sedona’s wild and unpredictable landscape.

    The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    By Tommy Acosta
Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
