Sedona, AZ — Wings & Wheels is a daylong celebration of Aviation and Automobiles all at the Sedona Airport.  The festivities begin this year at 9am, Saturday the 10th of October.  Parking is free for the day at the Scenic Overlook Parking lot.

The airport remains open for business as usual (so you can fly in to take in the show) with the West Ramp transformed into a carnival of aircraft static displays, classic and vintage cars by the Sedona Car Club, food trucks plus various vendor and community organization booths.  Patrons are asked to bring a non-perishable food item per person as their entrance fee, all of which benefit the Sedona Community Food Bank.

The centerpiece of this year’s show is the Consolidated P4Y-2G Privateer.  The featured aircraft at this year’s show is based in Arizona and is the ONLY remaining flying example of 739 produced!  The Privateer is a large aircraft, based on the WWII era B-24 Liberator bomber with a 110 ft wingspan, a longer fuselage (75 ft) and a single, taller tail.  Its original function was Maritime Patrol, but used in a variety of roles: reconnaissance, search and rescue, electronic countermeasures, communication and anti-shipping missions.  The Navy retired the PB4Y-2’s in 1954, and the Coast Guard retired the Privateer in 1958.

Later in its life it was used for weather observation, anti-submarine warfare, and finally aerial firefighting.  The type was used in World War II near the Philippines and in the Korean War with the United States Navy and Coast Guard.  It saw additional service with the French, Canadian, Honduran and Republic of China armed services.  The P4Y-2G Privateer is a fascinating piece of living aerial history.  Please join us on October 10th to get a first-hand look and pictures with a living, flying legend.  Check the Sedona Airport website regularly as we get closer to October 10th for more information.
