    Serve as an AmeriCorps Member in the Verde Valley

    Sedona, AZ (December 3, 2011) – The Yavapai County AmeriCorps Project (YCAP) is looking for two AmeriCorps members in the Verde Valley. AmeriCorps is an opportunity to make a big difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. It’s a chance to apply your skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. Members are provided a living allowance to support them during their terms of service and upon successful completion of their service they receive an AmeriCorps Educational Award. The Educational award can be utilized by the member, their child, or their grandchild.

    The first opportunity to provide service through AmeriCorps is with the after school program at Beaver Creek School. This part time AmeriCorps member will be tasked with creating a fun, stimulating, and sustainable curriculum that can be carried out by the staff to benefit the children of “Aftershock”, an after-school program for children ages 3-14 years. In addition the member will provide homework assistance and tutoring. This position will be approximately 15 hours a week for a 10 month period.

    The second opportunity is to serve as an AmeriCorps member is with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. This part time AmeriCorps Member will serve in the Cottonwood office, as well as in schools in and around Camp Verde. They will enhance the quality and increase the longevity of Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters site-supervised matches between high school and elementary students. This position will be approximately 25 hours a week for nine months.

    The Yavapai County AmeriCorps Project, a program of Community Counts, receives federal funding through the Governor’s Office of Children, Youth and Families.     The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
