By Ted Grussing… just got this shot Friday down at Bubbling Ponds in Page Springs with this great blue heron making a turn to come in for a landing on the dykes separating the ponds. The landing gear (legs) are rotating down to the down and locked position, the flaps are being extended to full (wings flaring and braking) and our winged pilot is about 30’ from touchdown near a companion who was busy filling the fuel tanks (fishing=energy to fly).

By Ted Grussing… we spent a few hours with blue birds at a little pond off of 89A south of Cottonwood early one morning. I took over 3,000 shots which has been winnowed down to a little over 500 of them and this one is among my favorites … at least tonight. They can be pushy and obnoxious to each other and many times incoming birds would push perched birds aside and sometimes off the perch. I’m looking forward to shooting them again.

Survey results shine light on recovery effort Seligman AZ (August 30, 2019) – The Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking volunteers to assist with fall spotlighting efforts to help document the population of endangered black-footed ferrets in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch, both near Seligman.As part of the recovery effort, the department has scheduled two five-night spotlighting events — Sept. 19-23 and Oct. 17-21. The spotlighting method involves using high-powered lights to locate and identify black-footed ferrets. Their eyeshine is reflected by the spotlight and helps surveyors with identifying and locating these elusive, nocturnal carnivores.
Officers using mobile ports to check semis driving through reservationPhoenix AZ (August 30, 2019) – To enhance safety on state highways, the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Enforcement and Compliance Division partnered with the Hopi Tribe to set up a mobile commercial vehicle inspection site on the reservation.Concerned that overweight semitrailers and those in violation of safety regulations may be using state roads that pass through the Hopi reservation to evade commercial ports of entry, the tribal government reached out to ADOT for assistance.
