By Beverly Kievman Copen Sedona AZ (February 21, 2013) – Friday Night, February 8th at Marketplace Café was absolutely fantastic! There was standing room only for most of the evening at our first “Acts of Kindness” Event, and people were still dancing at 11:00 pm. Approximately 20 musicians donated their time and talent, entertaining us throughout the evening. Even kids from our community were there with Jeanie Carroll, Music Director at Big Park Community School, to sing The Children’s Anthem (aka) “We are the Children of the World,” a song written by Shondra Jepperson.

By Anna Hunt, Staff Writer Waking Times (February 17, 2012) – Smart meters are being deployed by electric companies worldwide, replacing old, yet functioning analog meters, because it gives them a way to interact with the homes of their customers, monitor electricity consumption, and offer “smart home” control and functionality. Oh, and let’s not forget that they also save money. At least this the big sales pitch they are giving us. By providing detailed information about the energy usage in your home, smart meters can alert you if your new smart refrigerator suddenly becomes an electricity hog and needs to be…

By Henry Twombly, Sedona Resident(February 15, 2013) I am opposed to outfitting the wastewater plant with solar panels, because it’s just another construction boon and a waste of money, which should be used to pay down the city’s debt. According to the mayor, all the solar panels at the high school do not pay the full cost of its electric bills. So why spend lots of money on a project, whose cost savings will be minimal considering it will take decades to defray its original expense? Yet, regardless of public opinion, the Council will vote for the construction, which it…

By Virginia Volkman, Library Director Sedona AZ (February 15, 2013) – The Library will be closed on Monday, February 18, to observe Presidents Day. How you punctuate this holiday is a topic of discussion. No apostrophe is Associated Press style. For more information about the fascinating world of punctuation, I recommend the light-hearted book “Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation” by Lynne Truss. The joke that goes along with the title is a classic.

By Dr. Marta AdelsmanLife Coach in Communication and Consciousnesswww.DrMartaCoach.com (February 1, 2013)  To be honest, readers, I don’t want to write this column right now. I’ve been in a funk for the last day or two, and I’m just not in the mood! A couple of situations have arisen that have made me sad. I’ve also engaged in a conversation that hasn’t yet been resolved, and I feel angry.

By James Bishop Jr.(January 29, 2013) “Beautiful weather isn’t?” said the postman standing in the rain. Indeed, mismatches between the expected and the actual result are seemingly everywhere. Think of the state politicians blaming teachers for allowing classes to be too large while lobbying at the same time to have more teachers laid off. Think of the professor who never answers questions and never explains the key concepts of the course; however he expects students to read the assignment, and be prepared to answer the professor’s questions. Then there is the issue of Mad Magazine showing Alfred E. Neumann face…

By Councilor Mike Ward(January 22, 2013) This past year the city initiated its first Pre-Monsoon storm drainage cleanup initiative. While the city had always monitored and cleaned up public right-of-way drainages, for the first time the city inspected storm drainages on private property and notified the owners of problems that needed to be addressed. The city sent letters to approximately 400 property owners requesting to be allowed access on their property to conduct the inspections. The positive response was noteworthy.

By Virginia Volkman, Library Director Sedona AZ (January 18, 2013) – One of the true delights of working in a library is the pleasure of learning something new every day.  I always know that when the Quilt Show goes up it will give rise to many new subjects to explore. This year’s show features “Mimbres Memories Anew” by Jan B. Oden.  This quilt started out several years ago as exchange birthday blocks among the informal quilting group, the Last Straws.  Each member selected a project and the others helped by completing a block and returning it as a birthday gift.  Being…
