Sedona AZ (February 15, 2019) – The League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley (LWVGVV) Hot Topics Luncheon will feature a discussion on voting rights with special guests Leslie Hoffman, Yavapai County Recorder and Patty Hansen, Coconino County Recorder. The luncheon will be held on Thursday, February 28, at 11:30 AM at the Elks Lodge of Sedona, 110 Airport Road, Sedona.

“There have been several bills introduced in this year’s legislative session that would impact voters,” said Kathy Kinsella, President of the League of Women Voters Greater Verde Valley.   “County Recorders are charged with ensuring citizens’ right to vote. Ms. Hoffman and Ms. Hansen both have solid records of protecting voting rights. We are pleased that will join us to discuss various bills in the legislature and their own efforts to protect voter access and the integrity of the electoral process.”

Voting policies are enacted and enforced primarily at the state level, however County Recorders are responsible for election systems in their respective counties.  Bills that have been introduced in this year’s state legislature include changes to procedures for those on the permanent early voter list that would no longer allow for in person drop off ballots (SB1046), removing voters from registration rolls if they fail to vote is two successive election cycles (SB1188), and a bill that would provide for automatic voter registration when applying for or changing a driver license (SB1521.)

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization dedicated to public service in the field of government. It is a national organization — open to both men and women — whose purpose is to encourage political responsibility through informed and active participation in government. The League influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League never supports or opposes political parties or candidates for elective offices.  For more information, visit www.lwvverdevalley.com

The luncheon cost is $25.  Tickets are available at the door.  To rsvp, please contact kathykinsella@juno.com.

    What Would I Change?
    By Amaya Gayle Gregory

What would I change if I could? You and I both know I can’t, but it’s a fun exercise anyway. I would have been less of a know-it-all on my spiritual journey. It seems to be a side-effect of the path. Spiritual folks develop an all-knowing buffer to protect against their inevitable surrender to the unknown, but understanding that now didn’t make it gentler on me or those I loved, let alone those that I deemed not capable of getting it 😉 Yeah … I’d have dropped the spiritual snob act. I’d have recognized that spiritual radicals are only different on the outside from radical right Christians, and that the surface doesn’t really matter as much as I thought. We are all doing our couldn’t be otherwise things, playing our perfect roles. I’d have learned to bow down humbly before my fellow man, regardless of whether I agreed with him or not. We’re all in this together and not one of us will get out alive. Read more→
