By Elizabeth Cate, Collection Development Librarian Sedona AZ (November 19, 2012) – Biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs provide many different types of reading experiences, from the guilty pleasure of discovering your favorite movie star’s indiscretions to the concentration required for a scholarly exploration of a historical figure’s life and work. The new crop of biographies out this fall offer glimpses into the lives of a diverse assortment of interesting people.

By Dr. Marta Adelsmanwww.DrMartaCoach.com November 16, 2012 I talk with a lot of people who want to increase their self-esteem. I have a lot of compassion for them because I have suffered from low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence. I used to berate myself constantly for something I said or did. I would call myself names, doing a great deal of inner violence to myself – until I began the “I am” exercise.
By Recreation and Aquatics Supervisor Rachel Murdoch Sedona AZ (November 14, 2012) – The cool and colorful days of the fall are upon us, and now is the perfect season to spend time in one of your spectacular City parks. Take a leisurely stroll, peruse a museum, get competitive with a friendly game of tennis, or participate in a recreation program or special event. Whatever your desires may be, we have options for you to enjoy.
By Virginia Volkman, Library Director Sedona AZ (November 13, 2012) – The days leading up to Thanksgiving have been busy at Sedona Public Library, and we have much to be thankful for. November 11 was Mitzvah Day, and seven volunteers worked in the Children’s Room cleaning books and bookshelves, and generally giving the room and its contents a fall cleaning. We are thankful for the time they gave and the sparkle they created.
By Dr. Marta Adelsmanwww.DrMartaCoach.com Verde Valley AZ (November 2, 2012) – I have always thought I had a high forehead. Whenever the wind blows my hair back, I feel embarrassed, and I quickly smooth my hair down over my forehead. Somewhere in my background, I developed an opinion of high foreheads, at least of my high forehead. My mind convinced me that it just didn’t measure up to the fashion magazines’ images of beauty. I don’t know a single woman who doesn’t feel disdain or shame or embarrassment about some part of her body. (I bet you guys suffer from…
By James Bishop, Jr. Sedona AZ (October 30, 2012) – Sedona Recycles is proud to launch its latest program “Art In Public Spaces” with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to feature the first recycle bin to be adorned with a copy of an original painting by a local artist. Longtime local artist Jack Proctor painted a beautiful Sedona landscape in a Plein air style, which was photographed and turned into a high-definition image to fit a recycle bin. Sedona Recycles’ Art in Public Spaces is in keeping with Sedona’s signature theme, “A city animated by the arts.” Future bins dressed with art…
By Gary Krupa, CPA First of three articlesOctober 25, 2012 Your problem: People aren’t hiring you or purchasing your product, because they don’t have enough money, or they want to save their money. Therefore, you don’t have enough money to buy what you need. One solution: Barter. If you allow someone to pay you with their service or product that you need, you make it easier for them to afford your service or product. Otherwise, they’ll most likely purchase something they need more, from someone else. And you’ll have to find someone else to provide you with the product or…
By Beverly Copen copenbeverly@hotmail.com & Paul Jankovsky pjankovskysr@msn.com Sedona AZ (October 23, 2012) – What a sight – a huge blimp in the skies above the Village of Oak Creek. The George Brazil blimp event took wings just after dawn on Saturday October 20th, and continued at dawn Sunday morning for 3 hours. Many weeks of preparation and planning went into this marvelous gift from George and Pat Brazil, of Phoenix, to benefit the Mel Copen Vision Fund. The Sedona Golf Resort driving range was the site of this “sold-out” event, and had a considerable waiting list of hopeful riders. Approximately 60…
October 22, 2012 Dear Council members, Please support the mayor’s request for a work session in early 2013 to discuss the installation of smart meters in Sedona and potential health risks that could be associated with the meters. The purpose of the meeting would be to provide supporters and opponents of the installation of smart meters to present their findings to the City Council. This is a very fair and reasonable proposal and not one-sided like the one that staff had suggested. I also understand that the work session is an information only and no decision or action from the…
Dear Editor, I have concerns about the “Housing Development Areas” and related map on Tuesday’s City Council Agenda (Oct. 23rd). The map is required by the State before the City can use public funds to purchase land for housing. It is my understanding that the “serious need” and city-wide affordable housing need arose from a Housing Study done in 2006 — six years ago. Not only is this an old study with old data, but it was done during the housing bubble. Still, the Housing Commission claims it is not going to gather data or further analyze conditions. Unbelievable!
By Gary Krupa, CPA If you read the IRS instructions for filing Schedule A form 1040, you’ll discover that you can only claim a deduction for medical expenses and real estate taxes you paid. In IRS publication 502, it says “You cannot include medical expenses that were paid by insurance companies or other sources.” However, in a 2010 Tax Court decision, a daughter was allowed to deduct medical expenses and real estate taxes that her mother paid on her behalf. The daughter wasn’t eligible to be claimed as a dependent by her mother. The Tax Court ruled that the payments…
By Dr. Marta Adelsmanwww.DrMartaCoach.com I wrote the following article for the Verde Independent in the spring of 2004. It was one of the first that I wrote for the paper, and I share it with you here: Verde Valley AZ (September 28, 2012) – One of the siblings had to do it, and the lot fell to my husband. He needed to convince his mother that she could no longer handle the responsibility of driving. Her peripheral vision had greatly diminished, and she had had a minor stroke that impaired her judgment. After several challenging conversations about her driving, she…
October 18, 2012 To the Editor: As a police officer and a leader of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, I count on Arizona judges to properly apply the law and ensure that people seeking justice are treated fairly. Members of the law enforcement community rely on judges to respect prosecutors, defendants and victims. A November referendum, Proposition 115, threatens to inject politics into our courtrooms, jeopardizing justice for all involved.
By James Bishop, Jr.October 16, 2012 There was a time when politicians spread tales of women receiving huge taxpayer funds for their allegedly lurid lifestyles which included their refusal to do more with their time each day then wait for the next welfare check. “Welfare Queens,” as they were dubbed in the 1980’s, were leading America down the road to socialism. These days, amidst a nasty election campaign, cries of socialism ring out again about the new healthcare system, even though the new law creates a bonanza for private sector insurance companies. Now we are hearing about big oil companies…
By Henry TwomblyOctober 16, 2012 Did you know that our tax rates rose significantly for next year: 15% on property; 16% for the Sedona Fire District; and 28% for the Sedona-Oak Creek School (SOCSD) – not to mention a variety of county tax increases ranging from 14-20%? The County Board just rubber stamped all the tax hikes requested by these entities. (You may have missed this news because the [local news paper] placed the article in the back of the second section on the Friday before Labor Day. A seemingly deliberate decision to hide what should have been front page news.)
