By Chris Halstead, Sedona Resident(August 31, 2013) On Thursday August 29th 6-8pm @ the VOC Hilton the Red Rock Ranger District continued its series of meetings on the ‘future of trails in Sedona’.  The Coconino National Forest supplied a hydrologist, biologist, archeologist and several planners. Approximately 60 other local residents were in attendance, representing themselves as local trail users or on a dual role as members of Friends of the Forest, The Westerners and Sedona Mountain Bike club (SMBC). In spite of a couple attendees who were obviously there to push their angry agenda and their agenda only… the meeting…

By Zachary Richardson, Sedona Resident(August 26, 2013) Recently, there have been headline articles about the great fund raising event Save Our School Sports (SOSS).  We even had a Hollywood actress, Jenilee Harrison, here supporting our sports programs.  On the surface, it’s a positive thing, our community working together in time of crisis to raise money for our schools. When one digs a little deeper, one realizes that this is a self inflicted crisis.  Sedona failed to pass the Budget Increase Override (the Override) last November.  Consequently this significantly cut funding to the school district, resulting in critical courses and activities…

By Jennifer EppersonExecutive Director, Imagiventure Foundation Sedona AZ (August 26, 2013) – Ever since the nasty breakup scene a couple of weeks ago, when a hurt and angry population bowed and scraped before city council, begging council to be allowed to continue to provide hundreds of hours of free professional services, I have been thinking about what Sedona needs to become a city animated by the arts. The extraordinary new Sedona Community Plan, on which we will all vote next spring, puts forward the idea for Sedona to “be all that it can be”. If we, as citizens and artists,…

By Jim Rappaport, Sedona and Boston, MA(August 25, 2013) I spend part of my year in beautiful Sedona.  My wife and I are empty nesters and do not personally benefit from better schools and more money being spent on education.  That having been said, I have come to appreciate the diversity of our community and understand the importance of a solid education system, one that is well rounded and well-funded.  We all benefit.  Children are our future. These children will be our future leaders. Their parents are our friends, neighbors, employees, professionals, police and fire personnel, managers of the services…

By Craig Dible, Sedona Resident(August 25, 2013) At the June 19, 2013 Sedona City Council meeting, the APS smart meter controversy finally got a hearing. After listening to both sides, the Sedona City Council ended up sending a letter to the Arizona Corporation Commission requesting a no-fee, community-wide right of smart meter refusal. On July 11, 2013, the Big Park Regional Coordinating Council unanimously approved sponsoring a similar community meeting concerning the pros and cons of smart meters in the Village of Oak Creek.

By Warren Woodward, Sedona Resident(August 22, 2013) Thanks to the ACC’s negligence, APS is now installing “smart” meters in Payson. In conjunction with the installations, APS brags they are making “every effort to keep you informed.” It’s amazing how much misinformation they can cram on a door-hanger. Read about it in my letter to the ACC here: APS Door-Hanger August 22, 2013 Letter to the ACC

By Dr. Marta AdelsmanLife Coach in Communication and Consciousnesswww.DrMartaCoach.com (August 16, 2013) Have you ever experienced that feeling in the pit of your stomach that comes upon you when you’re faced with the task of making a speech or singing a solo?  Have you ever felt too intimidated to join eHarmony or to ratchet your business to the next level?  This pit-of-the-stomach feeling is called fear.  Perhaps you’re afraid that you’re too unlovable to end an abusive relationship.  Or you’re too worried about losing your children’s devotion to risk putting your foot down.  Maybe you’re so fearful of possible criticism that…

By Warren Woodward, Sedona Resident(August 15, 2013)  I went to the August 5th meeting of the Arizona Corporation Commission. Despite being authorized by Arizona statute to determine the safety of utility equipment, and, despite being given evidence for years that “smart” meters cannot be proved safe, the ACC copped out and passed the buck to Arizona Department of Health Services, voting to have them do a study that will take a year. Worse, the ACC is allowing continued “smart” meter installations even though safety has not been proved! Meanwhile, APS “opted out” from attending a “smart” meter public forum they…

By Nancy Robb Dunst, Sedona Resident(August 15, 2013) The Sedona City Council and Staff have eliminated the arts commission in their 4-3 vote on August 14th. Their arguments were, it was not effective, not productive, had high turnover, took up to much staff time, city money and they wanted to get around the open meeting law. They never completely identified the problems, and how they might resolve them; nor even asked the public what they thought. And never at anytime did staff ask the art commissioners for discussion or input. They just told them, this is the way it was…

By Judy Reddington, Sedona Resident(August 15, 2013) Wednesday, August 14th, a hot day, in the middle of the afternoon, middle of the month and middle of the summer is an unlikely time to “pack the council chamber”. The council chamber was over flowing with people of good will who have been contributors to community life in Sedona. Filling the seats for the 3+ hour meeting were leaders from many different viewpoints, not only experienced commissioners. There were many eloquent speakers and heartfelt comments, 90+ percent of which involved pleas for study, time and continuation of the current system if a…

Next, either the Verde River is safe from developers and deranged politicians, or it may soon run dry. Finally, either beauty has become a mere commodity separate from commercial hustle and bustle or deliberations about arts and culture remain dominant in political and public discourse. By Warren Woodward, Sedona Resident(August 6, 2013)  In the ACC’s 2007 decision that enabled the start of the “smart” meter fiasco in Arizona, a cost/benefit analysis was called for but never done. Since then it has been pointed out repeatedly to the ACC that “smart” meters are a boondoggle. Included has been a detailed report by the Connecticut Attorney General. The report was based on a “smart” meter pilot project involving thousands of real people and meters. Now, after another study, Germany joins the list of places waking up to economic reality. Frankly, I find it amazing that anyone would…

By Jennifer Epperson/Executive DirectorImagiventure Foundation Sedona AZ (August 4, 2013) – For a person who has so much to say about death, Tina Mion is pretty damned funny.
