City of Sedona ArizonaSedona AZ (July 18, 2019) – Sedona residents will have a rare opportunity to provide direct input on state legislation that governs short-term rentals at a July 24 listening session held by Arizona State Rep. Bob Thorpe.

Thorpe, District 6 Republican, will host the listening session July 24, beginning at 3 p.m., in the Sedona City Council Chambers located in the city hall complex at 102 Roadrunner Dr.

Thorpe was a co-sponsor of House Bill 2672, signed by Gov. Ducey in May, that prohibits homeowners from allowing their properties to be used for special events. HB 2672 was written in response to community complaints about “party houses” following Arizona’s adoption of SB 1350, the law that prohibits cities from adopting ordinances to limit or control short-term rentals.

Thorpe requested the forum to hear directly from Sedonans about the impacts of SB 1350.

While a quorum of the the Sedona City Council will be present at this event, this is not a city council meeting. The host and organizer of the event is Rep. Thorpe. The event will begin with a brief factual presentation from city staff members on SB 1350 and HB 2672 as those pieces of legislation relate to Sedona. The remainder of the time will be devoted entirely to comments from the public.

Depending on turnout, Rep. Thorpe may or may not place a time limit on speakers’ comments to allow everyone a chance to be heard and to allow time for questions.

Those unable to attend the meeting but who wish to share a comment with Rep. Thorpe can do so via the Arizona Legislature comment form located at https://www.azleg.gov/emailazleg/?legislatorId=1872

If you are in town, you must attend this meeting. We are being over run by short term rentals. Airbnb used to be owner occupied single family homes renting out a spare room to visitors. Now it is corporations building non-owner occupied large buildings in our residential neighborhoods. Rep Thorpe was a co-sponsor of a state bill that does not allow Sedona or any other town in AZ regulate these mini hotels. One is being built across the street from me in Chapel Vista. It has 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. It is called a “Suite Retreat.” It is a joke, a very sad one. Please attend and tell Rep Thorpe your concerns.

Great meeting on short term housing at city hall yesterday 3 to 6 P.M. The City showed shocking maps of over 1000 over night housing units in the village ,Sedona and up town and the canyon. This is from a report the city commissioned. (good numbers).

Rep, Thorpe LD-6 our state senator introduced SB1350, but when asked who introduced the bill he forgot, I had to remind him he did.!!!!
He likes to play the ” Im just a “Country nice guy” but his Mr…. Rodgers act came off as just that an act. This guy is all “T” party and power to the state not local control.

SB-1350 was his bill and he allowed no public meetings and no hearings and he acted like it was all news to him. Now we says lets fix it!…. (and yes he is up for election)
What it came down to is nothing can be done.
Prop-207 will stop any new laws from changing SB-1350 you now have 1000 new over night and party house units that are outside the control of the city or the state …and More to come Enjoy the traffic thanks to Mr. Thorpe and Governor Ducey.
