City of Sedona ArizonaSedona AZ (June 22, 2015) – The City of Sedona pavement repair work on SR 89A in Uptown Sedona, which began on June 15, is progressing on schedule.

“While the Uptown Paving Project has presented some challenges, the contractor, J. Banicki Construction, has been very responsive to issues and kept the project on schedule,” states Assistant Community Development Director/City Engineer Andy Dickey.

Businesses in Uptown Sedona are open and parking is available along SR 89A with minimal restrictions due to construction.  In addition, public parking is available at various locations.

Construction hours are Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.  No work will be done on Saturday and Sunday.  In addition, no construction will take place during the Fourth of July weekend (July 3, 4, and 5) as well as the weekend of Sedona Main Street Program’s National Day of the Cowboy event (July 24, 25, and 26).

This project includes pavement replacement between Forest Road and just north of Art Barn Road.  It will occur in the travel lane portion of the road only and will not include the on-street parking areas.  The road is in failing condition due in part to the 25,000 vehicles that travel the road each day, based on a yearly average.  The repair work will not just address the surface of the road but will also rebuild portions of the subgrade, thereby improving smooth, safe travel and reducing the need for future disturbances to perform repairs.

Major paving work is scheduled to be complete by July 31 and all work completed by August 7, if there are no significant delays.

Traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times.  When construction delays are necessary, the goal is to keep them less than 15 minutes.  The City urges motorists to be safe and patient when passing through the work zone.

The City will post background information and frequent status updates at www.SedonaAZ.gov/UPP in order to keep citizens informed as the project progresses.  You may also sign up to receive updates via email.  To sign up, go to www.SedonaAZ.gov/notify, and under the News & Update section, check the Uptown Paving Project box.

    If I Were Curtis Sliwa
    By Tommy Acosta

One of my guilty little pleasures is imagining what I would do if I was in someone else’s shoes, especially politicians. In this essay I would love to jump into the shoes of Curtis Sliwa, a former New York City vigilante who founded the Guardian Angels and is now running as a Republican for mayor of his city.
