I grabbed my journal to try to make sense of the confusion and internal dissonance I felt. I wanted to shed some light on a pattern that has shown up in my life for many years (the details don’t matter here), a pattern that I felt did not serve me. “Finally,” I thought, “I’m going to get a handle on this problem!”
Following my usual journaling style, I wrote out the “problem” as I saw it and then sat quietly, ready to face it down. I asked and waited for an answer to percolate from the Silence into my conscious mind, one that would put a sword right into the heart of the problem. With pen poised, I would write whatever came to me.
I wasn’t prepared for what happened next. Usually I would “hear” and write down some wise advice. This time, however, the answer that came differed from any I had heard in previous journaling experiences:
“There is no problem.”
What?! I looked and listened some more. There has to be a problem! After all, I had felt a lot of angst about something! Well, I couldn’t find it.
As I closed my journal and put down my pen, along with some relief I felt a little disappointed. How could it be that I had found nothing there?
Then I understood – my disappointment had come from an egoic need to keep the drama alive. After all, drama presents the ego with a nice juicy steak upon which it can feed and appear to become more powerful.
One thing that I learned from this experience: the mind labels situations, events and people as “problems” only because of its diminished and contracted perspective. From the point of view of the silence of Being, nothing that occurs contains anything problematic.
Being sees only innate harmony. Everything happens according to some larger plan, even though it looks like chaos to the mind.
All things in life unfold perfectly for our good. We can allow the discomfort and pain of “problems” and learn to welcome them. Through staying present and grounded all day long in that silent space of Being, only Peace exists.
Nothing is wrong — ever.
