Sedona AZ (May 22, 2014) – With the upcoming 2014 election campaign kicking off, the City of Sedona reminds the community of the political sign code regulations approved by City Council in response to a State Law. In 2011, state legislation mandated that all municipalities allow political signs with size and location limits that dramatically exceeded prevailing Sedona City standards for political signs. The City’s political sign restrictions had served for years to limit the negative aesthetic effects of numerous large political signs throughout the city and thereby served to fulfill the City’s vision of enhancing its natural beauty.
The following highlights some of key aspects of Sedona’s political sign code regulations:
Voluntary Guidelines:
- It is recommended that no political signs be placed on or about public property or within any public rights-of-way.
- Political signs cannot be erected earlier than 60 days prior to the voting period, and it is recommended that such signs be removed within 5 days after the Election Day.
- It is recommended that only 1 sign be placed per street frontage per lot or parcel for each candidate or measure, and that the size of the sign not exceed 6 square feet in area and 3 feet in height.
Mandatory Regulations:
- Political signs are not allowed within ADOT rights-of-way. However, political signs may be allowed within City of Sedona public rights-of-way.
- Political signs may be placed on private property with property owner’s approval.
- Political signs must be stationary, unlighted and temporary.
- Political signs shall contain the name and telephone number of the candidate or campaign committee contact person responsible for the sign.
- Political signs cannot not exceed 16 square feet in areas zoned for residential use or 32 square feet in all other zoned areas. All political signs shall not exceed 5 feet in height.
- Specific areas within City of Sedona rights-of-way are designated as “political sign free zones” due to predominance of commercial tourism, resort and hotel uses. Please see the code for specific information about locations.
