SEDONA, Ariz. — Visitors to Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village on Friday, Sept. 4 can watch two artworks come into being in real time, as sister galleries Creative Gateways Gallery and Rowe Fine Art Gallery host free live demonstrations from 4 to 7 p.m. for First Friday.
At Creative Gateways Gallery (Suite B125), artist Ulises Palomino will demonstrate reverse painting on clear acrylic — a technique in which the finest details go down first and the background last, painted from behind the panel while the image appears on the front. One misplaced stroke sits in front of everything painted after it, which is why Palomino calls it the technique with no undo button. Visitors watch from the front side as a Sedona landscape materializes in reverse.
At Rowe Fine Art Gallery (Suite A102), patineur Erik Petersen will apply a live patina to a bronze sculpture from 5 to 6 p.m. — torch in hand, using heat and chemistry that reveal their colors only on contact with the hot metal. Petersen patinas the work of gallery artists Ken Rowe and Kim Kori as well as his father, sculptor Joel Petersen, alongside his own work. Rowe Fine Art Gallery was voted Best Art Gallery in the 26th annual Sedona Survey.
