LTPV Statements Made with No Facts Sedona, AZ (October 24, 2011 – I’m sure you’ve been seeing the ads in the RRN, indicating that those of us who support a “Yes” vote on Prop. 410 are lying, that we only want to stop lights because we’re irresponsible, that the lights are the same as the ones on the 179 roundabouts, so they’re fine, and won’t make a “river of light”, etc. One of the most egregious misstatements made by these ads is that owning the road will cost the city $60 million. Nowhere, ever, have they said how they got…

Sedona Needs to Say YES to 410 and NO to ADOT Sedona, AZ (October 25, 2011) – In the Oct 14 Editorial comment ” Guest perspectives” RRN states, “we will not print multiple guest perspectives by a single individual within a short period of time”, in that same editorial comment she states “Documents supporting any number or statistics must be provided”. I wonder how in the issue just previous on Oct 12, she would characterize the allowance for a FRONT PAGE article “89A will bankrupt the city”, giving the vice chairman of “Let the People Vote on 89A” the freedom…
You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts. By Sedona City Councilor Barbara Litrell and Vice Mayor Cliff Hamilton Sedona, AZ (October 24, 2011) – Robert Larson, owner of the Red Rock News, filled his October 21 editorial with unfounded generalities, misstatements and twisted facts. As the only printed news source in town, the Red Rock News would better serve the residents if it used accurate information in the right context. If we didn’t hope for better we would think the opponents of Prop 410 wrote the editorial, or Larson simply used the misinformation in…

The Road to Reading Starts at the Library by Karen Mack, Youth Services Librarian Sedona AZ (October 18, 2011) – The Sedona Public Library is, among many other things, a center for early childhood literacy. Because public libraries serve children for years before they begin school we have many opportunities to provide early literacy and learning experiences. Early literacy is what children know about reading before they actually read. Many research studies, including the 2000 National Assessment for Educational Progress, found that a significant percentage of children were entering kindergarten without the early literacy skills needed to learn to read.

A Critical Outlook at the Events in the Middle East . Uprisings across North Africa and the Middle East. Some succeed, others remain in doubt. Decades old dictatorships and authoritarian regimes falter and collapse. Others like Syria, Bahrain, Yemen use bloody repression while talking reform. Crowds of young people and ordinary folks use Twitter and Facebook to organize revolts. Islamic groups and factions wait in the wings. Where is it all going. Demonstrations…
Candidates for the Men in the Little White Coats by Eddie Maddock Sedona, AZ (October 16, 2011) – Holy Smokes! Usually I refrain from going “out and about” on Fridays so therefore hit West Sedona this afternoon . . . Thursday. Well, anyone who believes the amount of traffic out there on west SR89A is locally generated is a candidate for the men in the little white coats. Having stopped at New Frontier’s for dog food I picked up a prescription at Walgreen’s and then took my prize possession (dog) to the park on Sunset Drive.

Your voice is important because the result of this referendum can determine the future character of West Sedona. Some may try to discourage you from voting, saying that your vote has no meaning because the agreement between ADOT and the City are…

Old Hippies: Commercial Districts Need Lights & Lots of Car Traffic Sedona, AZ (October 7, 2011) Dear Editor, I moved here from Miami, Florida, after watching it change from a warm, sandy resort to a cold, crime ridden city. Commercial interests overbuilt the beach, which can’t be seen from most of the road that runs parallel to it. Irresponsible commercialization hurt the businesses and residents alike. Tourists were driven away, because Miami had “paved paradise and put up a parking lot”. The other day the following comment appeared on Sedonaeye.com from someone named Mike, probably a business owner in West…
No Property Tax in Sedona (reprinted from July 27, 2011) Sedona, AZ (October 7, 2011) – Almost everyone owning real estate in Sedona pays property tax (except for churches and some exempt non-profit groups) but few seem to know much about where that money goes. In short, it goes to schools, the fire district and county government. None goes to the city. Sedona does not have a city property tax. Over the years, we have developed a city culture that makes anyone even remotely discussing a city property tax a social outcast. Some say that stems from promises made when…
What About Utilities Under 89a? Sedona, AZ (October 7, 2011) – Comment: I support the city taking over 89A . My only question is, if piping or sewers, or cables are necessary in the future beneath 89A, would passing 410 mean that we could not access any state funding that might be potentially available because the city of Sedona “owns” the 89 corridor? Robert Cleland Answer: Dear Mr. Cleland, Sewers are already installed in the businesses along 89A. With the kind of regular maintenance they get, there is little likelihood of digging them up again any time soon – and…
