Sedona Heritage MuseumSedona AZ (October 11, 2020) – The Sedona Heritage Museum has announced that one of their almost 50,000 historic images of the greater Sedona area has been selected for inclusion on the 2020 Arizona Archives Month poster.

October is Archives Month, and each year, the Archives and Records Management Division of the Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records produces a poster highlighting materials from archives around the state. This year the state chose to look back at health, health care and the role of these in Arizona’s history. Submissions were to be related in some way to this topic, and illustrating Arizona’s health and medical fields and providers with compelling photographs.

The local Museum’s submission was a photo of Dr. Leo Schnur, Sedona’s first full-time doctor. Dr. Schnur was practicing on Arizona and North Dakota Indian reservations as a doctor for the Indian Service when in 1948 he assumed the position of physician and medical director of the Grand Canyon Hospital. He operated the small hospital at Grand Canyon Village and cared for all the employees and visitors as the only physician. Loving Oak Creek Canyon and having built a home here, Leo finally decided there were enough people in Sedona to support a physician and he opened an office in 1955, and used the Cottonwood Hospital to hospitalize his patients when needed. The Oak Creek Medical & Dental Clinic was the center of health care in Sedona until Leo retired and sold the office in 1969.

This is at least the 6th time that a photo from the Sedona Heritage Museum’s collection has been selected to appear on an Archives Month poster.

Arizona Archives Month posters are meant to represent the collections of both large and small Arizona repositories. Over a thousand posters will be distributed to state legislators, schools, family history and genealogy groups, museums, archival repositories and government offices throughout the state. Archives Month posters are made possible through generous funding from the Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board.

The Museum is located at 735 Jordan Road in Jordan Historical Park in Uptown Sedona and is open daily 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information, call 928-282-7038.
