Sedona News – To introduce our new 2024-25 season, The Sedona Women (TSW) are pleased to announce a presentation and discussion of significant and timely importance, Situational Awareness and Mindful Safety, on Thursday, September 12, at the Sedona Public Library, where TSW programs are scheduled monthly every second Thursday from September through May from 9:30 a.m. – noon.

    Larry Betz

Larry Betz is a seasoned expert in personal safety, situational awareness, and self-defense. With years of experience in the field, Larry brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insights to help individuals stay safe and prepared in various situations.  He is passionate about personal safety through strength and martial arts training, with emphasis on personal safety and protection, and fear management.  Three and a half years ago when relocating from NYC to Arizona, Larry opened Sedona Strength and Mobility, and Prepared Not Paranoid, focusing on fitness and personal safety through situational awareness and home security.

Situational safety and awareness includes several key concepts all centering on our mindset as it relates to confrontation management and survivability. Larry will discuss in detail all concepts of the combat mindset.

    • Levels of Awareness: It is crucial to understand the different levels of situational awareness and how to apply them in daily life. By learning to observe your environment, constantly evaluate it, and react appropriately to what you see, you can achieve a large degree of control over your circumstances. This means you need to learn to shift up and down a scale of alertness, so that you can match your level of readiness with the threat level encountered and as circumstances change around you.
    • Trusting Your Instincts: The importance of intuition and how it can be a powerful tool for personal safety.
    • Bad Guy Body Language: Recognizing the signs of potentially harmful individuals through their body language and behavior.
    • De-Escalation Strategies: Effective techniques to defuse potentially dangerous situations and avoid conflict.
    • The 10-Second Rule: Understanding the crucial seconds that can make a difference in assessing and reacting to a threat.

Following the presentation of key concepts, Larry will conduct an interactive discussion exploring real-life scenarios to practice and apply these mindful safety concepts.

This September 12th program is open to the public at the Sedona Public Library, 3250 White Bear Road in West Sedona. A meet-and-greet will begin at 9:30, followed by the program and Q&A at 10 a.m. To learn more about The Sedona Women or to become a member, visit the sedonawomen.com or contact Sedonawomen669@gmail.com.

    Ode to Sleeplessness

    By Amaya Gayle Gregory

I sleep well most nights. This is something relatively new for me. For many years, I was a raging insomniac. I didn’t sleep well last night and found myself meditating around 4am, not so much to get to sleep but for something to pass the time.
