Sedona News – The city of Sedona invites residents and members of the business community to apply for the 2024 Community Police Academy, a free program designed to experience firsthand engagement with the Sedona Police Department, have a better understanding of the department’s role within the community, and foster a collaborative relationship with residents. The police personnel are afforded direct interaction with community members to better understand what they value and gain perspective of community goals.

The eight-week program will be held every Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until approximately 9 p.m. starting on May 7, 2024. Most classes will be held at The Hub, located at 525-B Posse Ground Drive.

    Course curriculum includes:

    2. Crime scene investigations (fingerprinting and DNA collection)
    3. Traffic control and regulation (DUI, motorcycle detail, collision)
    4. Firearms
    5. Use of force
    6. Reporting and Investigating
    7. Specialty assignments: K-9, Narcotics Detective, School Resource Officer, motor officers, Community Service Officer, and Community Service Aid
    8. Volunteers
    9. Cadet Program
    10. Police communication (dispatch)

Applications must be received by April 23, 2024. Seats are limited to 15 individuals; participants will be notified by April 29, 2024, if they have been selected.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. An application can be obtained at www.sedonaaz.gov/policeacademy, at the Sedona Police Departments lobby, or by emailing Sgt. Brandon Bergstad at bbergstad@sedonaaz.gov.

Sedona has Community Policing? I rarely if ever see a patrol drive down my street or running radar during peak traffic hours. Never seen officers walking through neighborhoods and interacting with residents as Community Policing Predominantly entails. It also entails helping folks like Seniors with simple assistance like gutter cleaning or doing a BBQ for various neighborhoods when possible and not just doing Coffee with a Cop. People tend to sometimes misjudge Police Departments who aren’t Community Policing Departments and whose officers are only seen making arrests and knocking heads often being the only time the public sees them.
I do see patrols on 89A most every time I see one. I get there is policing and possibly big bust items to look for on 89A such as drug and human smuggling, DWI/DUI drivers but our neighbor hoods need and deserve equal or more attention than what is given to 89A traffic control which somehow misses the Monster Trucks and Stock Cars from blasting down it!
For the most part Sedona PD does its job keeping law and order in Sedona which is commendable. Just think they could do a far better job of integrating with and patrolling our neighborhoods.

If you recently moved to Sedona, you may notice that every four years, residents vote on something called Home Rule. The July 21 vote is simply about who controls Sedona’s city budget.
