    Fourth Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards

     

    Sedona, AZ (May 21, 2011) – The City of Sedona Arts and Culture Commission is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the Fourth Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards, which each year honor individuals, organizations, and businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the success of the arts in Sedona. Nominations must be received or postmarked by Monday, August 1, 2011.

    There are four nomination categories including Individual, Organization/Business, Lifetime Achievement, and Education

    The first two categories are for an individual, organization, gallery or other business who has made a significant contribution to the advancement, preservation or accessibility of the arts in Sedona, or who has demonstrated leadership in advancing the arts through advocacy, promotion, creativity, and innovation in development of the arts in Sedona.

    The category of Lifetime Achievement is for an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in advancing and supporting the arts and/or artists in Sedona over a significant number of years.

    Sedona Gift Shop

    The Education category is for an individual, organization, gallery or other business that has made significant contribution to the advancement or accessibility of arts education in the greater Sedona area, or demonstrated leadership in advancing arts education through advocacy, promotion, creativity, and innovation in the development of programs or venues in the greater Sedona area.

    Each recipient will be honored and receive an award at the fourth annual Mayor’s Arts Awards ceremony to be held in November at Los Abrigados Resort & Spa and sponsored by Diamond Resorts International.

    The Sad Lesson of Tyre Nichols

    Having grown up in the mean streets of the Bronx there is one lesson we learn early on, and that’s don’t mess with the cops when they got you down, and outnumbered. The beating of Tyre Nichols at the hands of the police preceding his death at the hospital could have been avoided if only he had the sense to not resist them. People fail to understand that on the streets, cops are basically “God.” You can’t fight them. If it takes one, two, five, ten or twenty officers they will eventually put you down and hurt you if they have to in the process of detaining or arresting you. In the Bronx we would fight amongst ourselves but when the cops came it was “Yes, officer. No, officer,” and do our best to look as innocent as possible. People need to understand that cops on the street represent the full power of the state and government. Read more→
