    Sedona AZ (May 9, 2014) – The National Theatre of London celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a new production of “King Lear” on Sunday, May 18. The Sedona International Film Festival hosts the big screen premiere of William Shakespeare’s renowned play starring the legendary Simon Russell Beale. There will be one show at 2 p.m. at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

    20140509_King-Lear2Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) returns to the National Theatre to direct Simon Russell Beale (Timon of Athens, Collaborators) in the title role of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

    An aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. His favorite, Cordelia, says nothing. Lear’s world descends into chaos.

    Thought to have been written between 1603 and 1606, “King Lear”is one of Shakespeare’s most renowned tragedies. This new production is the fourth in the National Theatre’s history.

    “King Lear” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Sunday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, or $12.50 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W.
