logo_cannedsedonaSedona AZ (April 20, 2016) – The 3rd Annual Canned Sedona, a benefit for the Sedona Community Food Bank and 4 other local charities, is underway and the organizing committee is now taking applications for local Amateur Chefs to compete, Charities to award and Sponsors for this exciting, tantalizing, and fun packed event.  Last year’s Canned was a great success and plans are underway to make this one bigger and better than the last.

Canned Sedona, to be held October 2, 2016 at Tlaquepaque, is a cooking competition  based on “Chopped”, a television series featured on the Food Network. Charities will be represented by local Amateur Chefs who will compete in a cook-off equipped with a barbeque grill and a basket of mystery ingredients.

Admission is a canned food item for the Sedona Community Food Bank plus a small donation.  The attendee gets to choose which charity their admission donation goes to.  The winning chef will receive bragging rights and a gift basket full of goodies!

The committee is currently seeking applications from local charities whose mission benefits one of the following categories: animals, women, children or elderly, arts and culture, and humanities.  The selected charities will exhibit at the event to promote their organization and receive proceeds donated to their charity.  Canned Sedona requires that all proceeds received by the charity stay in the Verde Valley and be used for one of the above purposes.  Each charity will be featured on all promotional materials and the committee encourages the charity to promote the event and themselves as well.

The Application deadline is May 30th, 2016.

Applications are also being accepted from local Amateur Chefs for the competition.  If you’ve dreamed of hearing those words’ “Chefs, open your baskets”, now is the time to step forward and show the community what you’ve got. There will be Chef Showdown prior to the main event to narrow the field to the Chef finalists.  Each Chef will be assigned a charity that they will represent.

To apply, become a sponsor or learn more about the event, please visit www.cannedsedona.com or request an application at cannedsedona@gmail.com.

City Council Weighs ATV Ban Ordinance Proposal
    By Tommy Acosta
The Sedona City Council at its May 23, 2023 meeting took no action on a proposed ordinance that would ban all off-road vehicles from being driven on state-owned public roads or streets owned by the city. The ordinance, spearheaded by Sedona Mayor Scott Jablow on the premise that such vehicles pose a risk to the health, safety and welfare of the community, would impose heavy fines to anyone driving the ATVs or OHVs on city streets, including S.R. 179 and S.R. 89A. ATV rental companies have admitted that such vehicles are not intended or designed to be driven on paved roads, yet, in Arizona, they are allowed to do so under Arizona Revised Statute 28-1174 (4B). Opponents against the ordinance argued at the meeting that if adopted the ban would cripple the ATV rental industry in Sedona and cause much hardship to the owners and employees, as it would effectively, as written, destroy their livelihood.
