Verde Valley News – Yavapai College held its 54th commencement ceremony at the Verde Valley campus’s Mabery Pavilion in Clarkdale on Saturday, May 4, honoring the students who completed their degree or certificate.

With 1,750 total graduates and 1,981 total certificates and degrees awarded, Provost of Yavapai College Dr. Doug Berry opened the ceremony by recognizing the faculty members and friends, family and classmates of the graduates who helped in supporting them in their achievement.

Keynote speaker Arizona State Representative Quang Nguyen then took to the podium to deliver his remarks. “It’s impossible not to feel the weight of both accomplishment and anticipation. Today marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Each one of you has embarked on a unique journey, filled with challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons,” he said.

Professor of Philosophy, Humanities Chair, and Co-President of the Faculty Senate at Yavapai College, Dr. Andrew Winters took the stage to address this year’s graduates, imploring them to live fully. “Embrace the opportunities that present themselves as you have those at Yavapai College. The world is filled with many surprising delights. We, as your teachers, have done what we can to ensure that you are prepared to welcome whatever opportunities the world presents you.”

Nursing student Taidyme Mae, who started taking classes at Yavapai College in 2016 while still in high school, then approached the microphone. She noted that the journey of education does not end with the attainment of a certificate or degree, saying that “It’s incumbent upon us to remain curious, informed, and continuously seek opportunities for growth and development. As we embark on the journey to care for others, we will expand our knowledge, refine our skills, and uphold the highest standards of safe and competent care for the communities we serve.”
