Sedona Entry Sign on SR 89A Restored After 30 Years

SEDONA, Ariz. – After 30 years welcoming visitors the city of Sedona has restored the Sedona entry sign on the west State Route 89A entrance to the city.

Time and exposure to the elements played a part in the sign’s deteriorating and need for restoration. City funds to protect Public Art were used to commission Marc Jacobsen of Sun Signs to restore this piece of Sedona’s artistic and welcoming history.

Originally created by artists David Platt and Lauren Fancher and installed in 1996, the sign has a stone base with steel, copper, and painted components. It is one of three Sedona entry signs, which are part of the city’s Public Art Collection.

“I am excited to have our Sedona entry sign looking like new again! Marc did an amazing job brightening the lettering and restoring richness to the copper and steel. It’s a pleasure to drive into West Sedona now and admire the care he put into breathing new life into this historic piece from our city’s Public Art Collection,” said Nancy Lattanzi, arts & culture specialist.

When asked about his role in the project, Marc Jacobsen said, “In the mid 1990’s the Sedona’s Art in Public Places Committee sent out a Call to Artists for three entry sign designs. I submitted a design proposal, which tied for first for the west Sedona location. After the committee met to vote, David and Lauren prevailed by one vote. Their workmanship was of exceptional quality. It was an honor and a bit of irony to come back 30 years later to restore this sign almost to its original glory.”

Wouldn’t it be nice if Sedona Code Enforcement followed the Code for outdoor lighting and even nicer if they followed the intent of Dark Sky Communities? They do not. We could see the Milky Way in our front yard in town until a neighbor installed new outdoor lighting and leaves floodlights on for 4 hours each night which light up the entire front yard and the front of the garage.

Not sure how to take your comment first off? Do you want a full time person driving around at night enforcing lighting? Or should I point out to you instead of bitching, do something about it?

And for future reference there is a new law on the book, that starts 1st of January 2028.
