    Dear Neighbors:

We would like to share why we strongly support a Yes vote on Prop 483.

A Yes vote on Prop 483 would uphold the zoning change for 5 acres in the northwest corner of the Cultural Park/Western Gateway and provide temporary overnight parking for Sedona’s unhoused workers and possibly for a small number of retired and disabled people. A program such as Safe Place to Park is as much about us as a caring community as it about our workers who need it.

We are living in new times, in which many workers making a modest income in Sedona’s tourist economy have few options for housing.  Surrounding areas have supported our burden and will continue to do so.  It’s time to acknowledge that many of our workers are quietly parking and living in their vehicles until housing is available.  To be clear, this is not and never will be considered housing.  It’s a bold temporary idea that says to our unhoused workers, “We support you until workforce housing is built.”

We all wish we could offer permanent housing to our workers now, but until we can, workers deserve a safe and well monitored space.  We are living in a new reality, one in which the gap between wages and housing costs have never been wider and Sedona has lost 1100 homes to vacation rentals.

Sedona has been and continues to be a caring community.  However, we understand that some caring, compassionate residents are worried about possible problems with this idea.  Sedona City leaders and staff have deeply researched this project.  We expect them to adapt to any possible issues and post regular public reports about the status of the program.  More importantly, we can trust our own collective abilities to prevent unfortunate outcomes that some have said may arrive.  We have helped shape the program, now we can monitor it.

Let’s not get lost in the weeds of minutiae and endless concerns. This project is too important to those who are waiting. More information can be found on sedonaaz.gov/safeplacefaq.  Please join us in voting YES on Prop 483 and give our unhoused workers a safe place to park as soon as possible.

    Sincerely,

    Linda Martinez

Spending almost one million dollars of tax payers money so homeless can sleep in their cars is just a bad idea. Do the math! This is spending almost $25,000 per person for a parking space. I have a better idea. The churches in Sedona have parking lots that are empty over night. Let them provide free overnight parking for homeless people. It saves the taxpayers a ton of money and shows charity for the churches.

Great idea mkjeeves, why dont you start calling the churches up then? You think if they F’ing cared they would of offered already! Always worried about your tax money, never bitch about wars or oil companies that get billions of our tax money?

      Hypocrisy much?

      • JB on October 21, 2024 11:00 am

        WS Dave,
churches are for showing off your BMW, Armani Suits and Rolex Watches in front of a Leer Jet owning, Rolex wearing church leader who live tax free in Mega Church facilities. They’re not for helping the poor, unhoused, hungry, disabled or sick like their story book tells them to. If people were truly good & holy and followed the story book word of Christ we wouldn’t have wars, famine/hunger, hate, Dump or anything else evil in this world. Instead religion is used as an excuse to do those things rather than prevent them as claimed by their Bible thumping sheeple.

        • Bob Rausch on October 21, 2024 3:25 pm

Wars and oil companies? Really? What does that have to do with car park that can cause potential bad issues, like in other states.

We’re not smart enough to look at the other examples? We got to repeat the same mistakes?

        • Bob Rousch on October 21, 2024 3:27 pm

JB, maybe it is time to stop being a cynic and join one of the local churches, and participate in the many missions that they do.for locals and abroad.

It is hard ro believe the ignorance of your statement.

          • JB on October 21, 2024 4:57 pm

I was a Catholic until I woke up from being brainwashed as an impressionable child until I woke up and realized it was all just a fairy tale lie to make money off of! Thanks but no thanks! Try recruiting someone younger, you know, the type Priests like! I’m not an impressionable child any longer!

          • RTV1 on October 21, 2024 5:35 pm

JB don’t waste your time! They’re nothing more than cults who break their own rules then absolve themselves by admitting they broke the rules as they continue to break the rules! Such a gimmick!

            • JB on October 25, 2024 7:32 am

              RTV1 (hope is correct).

Gilbert child molestation suspect confirmed on the run after missing hearing ahead of trial https://www.azfamily.com/2024/10/25/gilbert-child-molestation-suspect-confirmed-run-after-missing-hearing-ahead-trial/

Yeah a lot of very bad bad people go to church. There are plenty of good, kind, loving, moral, non rascist people who have never stepped foot in a “place of worship”, don’t believe in “A GOD” or “The God” and have never been brainwashed with fairy tale religious cult manuals. You don’t have to be religious to do “good works” either. Anyone can help their neighbors, join an NGO that helps others, work in medicine etc. They insist you do but reality says you don’t!

    3. Michael Schroeder on October 21, 2024 3:45 pm

      Linda,

We don’t need a $23 million piece of property to park homless people. In fact we really didn’t need to spend $10 million in tax dollars and borrow $13 million at all.

Remember this is a city that budgeted $2.7 million for Forest Road, and is now at $12.9 million? And the garage in uptown? Not a stellar record.

There are multiple examples of failed homeless car parks. It is incomprehensible to think the city can’t do better. It seems like somone would have had the commpm sense to look at other cities that failed that created real nightmares for their communities.

The city owns other pieces property to try this experiment, not a prime piece of real estate. They’re supposed to be trying to develope a plan. You think you can just turn this off in this legal day an age? Who the heck is advising these people?

The city found parking for the tourist shuttle system. One was on an unused church lot, others were 1 or 2 acre parcels. They own 107 parcels, 652 acres.

Nobody in their right mind takes 40 acres of prime real estate and screws it up like this.

When you have real legitimate options you use THEM for you experiment

I am reminded of Ringo Starr’s Law of Politics: Anything government touches turns to sh*t.

      • TJ Hall on October 22, 2024 11:00 am

Ringo Star is a billionaire acid headed musician who has never done public or military service in his pampered life! Is that why you quote him? Because he is so relatable?

        • @TJ Hall on October 22, 2024 8:33 pm

Tisk, tisk, TJ. Such envy, such jealousy, such hatred. Very unhealthy!

          • TJ Hall on October 23, 2024 11:40 am

Ha it’s the truth not jealousy, hatred or the unhealthy conspiracies you adhere to!

You’re just like Trump! Trying to put his hatred and corruption upon others and crying “witch hunt” “rigged” “fake news” and all the other nonsense he cries when cold out! Just as you do! Two nuts in one shell.
Just because you and he think that bold face lies are the truth because you say so in no way makes it true except in feeble minds.

      • Jack Keebler on October 24, 2024 10:37 am

Obviously he’s referring to the colonizing clown circus that is the Royal Family not government in general.

    5. West Sedona Dave on October 22, 2024 5:04 am

Cut the crap. You are the all wise one, and love to toot your own horn. You know damn well following the project whats going on! Government MUST take the LOW BIDDER! Thats why you all government hating right wing loons think you know it all
      pretending to walk on water,

So cut the crap, join society and have empathy for others not as lucky as you are.

    6. Nicolas Stame on October 24, 2024 5:19 pm

Very unhealthy to lie and spread lies not unhealthy to say truth like Mr JB has here. There’s no hate in truth telling there’s only hate when people lie as a small percentage of people do here non stop in order to support a serial liar named Trump.

I grew up under Glasnost and Soviet liars and criminals like the one in the House of the Government of the Russian Federation, Russian: Дом Правительства Российской Федерации who is the Criminal President of Russia named Putin. We lived in an alternate reality full of lies under their criminal Stasi and KGB which is where Putin cut his teeth in political crime. He was a street thug prior to that and still is. The kind of thug you Americans want deported yesterday! And yet there are those on here who support criminals like Putin and Trump as long as they do all of the nasty illegal and immoral things no true American would tolerate unless they themselves are criminals which is more than likely the case here.

And now Putin has KPA or North Korean “Peoples” (only sycophant loyalist can join) Army troops training in Russia to fight against US Allies in Ukraine while using Iranian, Russian, N Korea and Chinese weaponry. And yet you continue to be Putin apologist! Why? Because Trump told you those criminals are better and more loyal to him than our own government and Allie’s and you blindly follow his criminal lead.

If Trump attempted 1% of the crimes he has committed back in the days following WWII into the Cold War, he would’ve been tried for treason and executed right next to the Roseburg’s. And yet you support him!

This is mind boggling and disgusting! What happened to your country? Russia N Korea China and Iran are kicking your asses without firing a shot!

    7. TJ Hall on October 27, 2024 10:32 am

According to the Bible, Jesus showed great compassion and concern for the poor and marginalized, including those who could be considered homeless, often actively reaching out to them and demonstrating his care through healing and acts of kindness; essentially viewing them as people deserving of love and support, aligning himself with their plight by saying “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

      Hmmmm!

      • JB on October 27, 2024 10:47 am

TJ we’re talking about a country who has zero issue using extreme force to remove homeless people from their eyesight even if they are veterans who fought to defend it. We are a nation of haves and cannot allow to have while pretending to be good Christians!
