Sedona, AZ — Indivisible and Democratic organizations throughout the Verde Valley stood shoulder to shoulder with working families today joining a statewide show of strength as part of the May Day Strong mobilization. Over 450 concerned community residents gathered to declare that it’s time to put people over profits and take power back from the billionaires who are dismantling our livelihoods.

The May Day Strong events, held across the country on International Workers’ Day, highlight the growing movement of people committed to fighting for good jobs, strong affordable health care, and a democracy that works for everyone—not just the ultra-rich.

“We’re here to honor workers and preserve their rights,” said Laura Masters, Co-Leader of Indivisible Rimrock. She pointed out that even in a place as seemingly “red” as Rimrock, the newly formed Progressive group has 90 members.

“We have the power to stand up and advocate for our communities, to fight for the rights of the marginalized, and to restore integrity to our government,” said Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Le Master of the Sedona United Methodist Church, a speaker at the Sedona rally. “We want transparency, compassion and leadership that listens to the concerns of the people, not just the select few.”

The Verde Valley groups represented are proud to join with labor unions, immigrant justice advocates, educators, and working families in this fight. The movement draws strength from the legacy of labor and civil rights struggles and aims to build a future rooted in fairness, dignity, and democracy. Included were: Democrats of the Red Rocks, Verde Valley Democrats, Indivisible Sedona, After The March Indivisible, Indivisible Rimrock, Camp Verde Indivisible and Indivisible Cottonwood, Clarkdale, and Cornville.

I was talking to the Sedona.biz publisher/editor the other day, Tommy Acosta, and learned that our common friend Fernando Rivera of North Carolina passed away. It was reported that life and time caught him and then overcame him, and his heart quietly and suddenly failed.
