Sedona News – The University Women of Sedona will host their next informational meeting on Monday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. when Dr. Maurice Crandall will present on “Native American Education, Then and Now.”
With the recent discoveries of mass graves at Canadian Indian boarding schools, the media has turned increasing attention to the legacy of Native American education in North America. This talk will address the history of Indian education such as colonial experiments in educating Native American children such as Dartmouth College (established in 1769), the Indian boarding school system of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and current challenges faced by Native American students. Professor Crandall will cover a wide range of topics, including the controversy over Native American sports mascots and Yavapai-Apache education in the Verde Valley. The presentation will be from an Indigenous perspective; the speaker is a descendant of Indian boarding school survivors.
Dr. Crandall is an associate professor of History at Arizona State University and an enrolled member of the Yavapai-Apache Nation. He previously taught at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. Professor Crandall is a multi-award-winning author and public intellectual who has presented his research throughout the United States, as well as in Canada and Europe. He is currently working on a book about the later lives of Yavapai and Apache former Army Scouts. He received his PhD from the University of New Mexico and is a graduate of Mingus Union High School.
This meeting is open to women in the Verde Valley who are interested in this topic and the opportunity to network with other women who are involved in elevating women through education. Guests are invited to attend this or a future meeting. University Women of Sedona’s mission is to give scholarships to support women in furthering their educational opportunities to an accredited local college or university. Refreshments will be served.
