… about seven years ago, friends Clyde and Joan gave us a cut off from one of their Argentine Giant Cactus plants … we love them and the beautiful look into the depths of forever, like the fictional universe in Greg Bear’s book Eon … traveling along The Way. For years the plant stayed alive, but neither grew nor produced a bloom. Cork kept hoping for it to bloom, but never got to see it occur. This year it has grown and the first of three blooms has appeared and I took this shot of it this afternoon … perhaps the blooms had a long way to travel on The Way … whatever, they are here now and I no longer have to duck into neighbors yards to get shots of this wonderful flower.

A fun weekend, Mariah is in annual now and the next good morning, it is back into the air and looking into the depths of the volcanic cones on the plateau for an article my friend Bob Thompson, a glider guider and retired geology professor, and I are doing on the Flagstaff Volcanic Field. About 600 volcanic cinder cones, some named, some not and covering hundreds of square miles. Bill Williams Mountain was the first on the field and erupted about three and a half million years ago. The activity has been more or less continuous with Sunset Crater the most recent about eight hundred years ago. http://azgeology.azgs.az.gov/azgs/image-of-the-day/images/bill-williams-mountain-san-franciso-volcanic-field Thanks to Mike Conway of Arizona Geological Survey … I have granted AZGS free and unlimited use of my photography and it is nice to see them make use of them throughout their website including their Home page http://www.azgs.az.gov/ . More to come Mike.

We’re into the new week and methinks it will be a good one … at least that is what I am choosing for my week … and breathing, the core requirement of every day. Have a beautiful day and share a smile with someone today.

    Cheers

    Ted

For a few hours here in the still morning I wash myself clean of civilization,
and purge myself of things and the accumulated rubbish of time.

I see all as one, and nothing repels me, as this new day climbs noiselessly
out of the valley of the night.

    The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    By Tommy Acosta
Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
