Sedona, AZ –Today I am grieving. Deeply. Painfully. Messily. Preciously. Not for the beloveds I’ve lost but for this world imploding about me. Maybe it’s nothing to grieve. Perhaps it was never worth the love I gave it. Maybe this country has always been the monster in the closet that everyone cowered from while smiling and pretending to get along.

I was privileged to be white in a white loving country, even though I didn’t know it while I was growing up. I didn’t realize how so many others felt. I ticked two of the boxes — woman and straight — and thought I had a clue.

Now as those around me are trying to stuff me and everyone with a vagina (used and out of date or not) back into a box, I am getting a glimpse of what all those not white, not straight, anyone who doesn’t fit the correct and constantly changing profile humans felt, but it is still just a tiny taste.

This government may make me wear a dress or cover my head, may ensure I know my place and require than I bow and scrape to the master, but it likely won’t round me up, throw me in camps, separate me from my husband and children, and bus me or put me on a plane to a country I haven’t even visited. But … all bets are off. Maybe they’ll just shoot me, after all I am no longer productive sexually or financially. To the new regime, a regime that values the almighty dollar over everything else, I have no worth. I land in the debts column not assets.

So yeah, I am grieving, but not for myself. I’ve had a life lived under the possibility of freedom. I could move about the country and the world and while other countries weren’t always welcoming to ugly Americans, they didn’t close their doors which cannot but be far off.

Reading articles from other countries it’s pretty obvious that the ugly American is much uglier in the eyes of Canada, Europe, Australia, Asia, Mexico and Southern America. In less than a month, our country has accomplished something I would have never expected — isolation, pariah status, out in the cold alone — except of course for Russia. We are Russia’s little bitch. Now that’s something to grieve.

It rolls my stomach and makes me want to look away but I will not look away. This is my world now. If I look away this time, I will never live a life of anything but denial or make-believe, and I won’t live that way. I’d rather feel what I am feeling, grieve while I am grieving, even if this grief lasts until my last breath. At least I’ll be alive until that moment.

I grieve for compassion. I grieve for those who are losing their livelihoods, those whose children now worry where their next meal will come from, whether men will come to the door and take Daddy away, who will depend on the generosity of fellow humans, because it won’t be coming from the social safety net. That is being taken apart web by web.

I grieve for the reality of interconnectedness, for standing by allies, for having allies who are the good guys. I grieve for wearing the white hat even if the white hat was only a mirage. I grieve for what my Dad’s generation stood for, went to war for, died for. As a tear falls from my eye, I wonder what he’d think about us becoming what we fought against.

We’re paying our dues, living our karma, caught between many people’s desires to do and be good and the truth of our violent past. We erased the natives of the plains and mountains and called it manifest destiny. We kidnapped and enslaved African people, and in our need and greed, told the story that black people had no souls, weren’t mentally equal to whites, a totally fabricated story that many still believe today. We raped and abused women and said, boys will be boys, worrying more about the damage done to young men than the girls they raped. We used preemptive force on countries instead of self-defense, killing thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of innocents who were simply the collateral of war.

We weren’t the white hats. Never were. We had this powerful piece of paper but never lived up to its promise. We had the opportunity to rise but our greed, our fear of not having, won out. Today I am grieving for the lost potential, for the stories we told, for the possibilities we crushed in our rush for more.

So Today I feel. I feel that loss. I feel the wounds, the damage: a black man sitting on a horse, begging for his life, awaiting that fateful slap when he will be hanging from a tree for not looking down; a woman pushed to the ground, surrounded by three strong men with pants around their knees; a small dark-haired girl, the sound of rockets and no time to run, no place to hide; a Native American out hunting, becoming the hunted, beautiful long hair bloodied and hanging on a saddle; a politician with heart, harpooned with lies, family in shambles; land drenched in oil, seeping into the watershed, poisoning purity for years to come; skies filled with invisible remains of manufacturing glory.

The endless list is bringing life as we’ve known it to a grinding halt. It’s not all bad. They say you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, and we are in the process of finding out what that feels like. Maybe then we’ll make different choices. Maybe we’ll realize that what we do always comes full circle. We can’t duck or hide.

So I grieve. Why? Because it’s what’s appearing today. It’s what’s here right now, not because it is right or wrong, but because it is my reality, and I am unwilling to live a pretend life. I’ve done that and I was more miserable trying to avoid and deny how I felt than I am now, feeling what’s here.

    So I grieve.

It is a disgrace that you print this on Memorial Day when so many of our Boys lost their lives for all other countries and ALL other races.

so easy on the harshness, yes the day is to be respected but not her intention —probably — with the work or the publication by the editor, thanks

        Hey Jim,
you forgot the many women who lost their lives putting on the uniform from the civil war to present day, as doctors, nurses, pilots, infantry and even Special Operations in WWII through today. Oh and somehow you also forgot most those in uniform were minorities and still are. So “our boys” who fought WITH other countries as an ALLIED force against Fascism we’re mostly comprised of the “people of color” like the all Black and all Asian Infantry and Armored units who were some of the most decorated units of the war. In WWI, WWII and post 9/12 Iraq and Afghanistan the US was not the go it alone superhero force you seem to think it was. Nope it was a coalition of countries that made temporarily defeating fascism possible. The US could never have done so alone and we were quite late to the game during WWII so we had fresher newer troops and equipment than our allies.
Next time you read military history try reading something written by someone who actually slugged it out in the trenches as it were as opposed to going with the John Wayne/Rambo (only white guys are heroes) farcical nonsense depiction of things.

Hi Jim. My mother was one of those women in WWII who enlisted in the WACS. She was quite the lady. I appreciate your word more than I can say. It’s nice to see someone who gets it.

Strange fruit Amaya, strange fruit. I never thought our country would be taken over by fascist but here we are with our country, government and rights being stripped from us all by a minority of criminal oligarchs who bought their power rather than earning it.

David you must be speaking about the Trump Administration and MAGA here because they are the only liars, fear mongers, dividers, haters and most of all Criminals who have created multiple actual illegal wars both here at home and abroad that have killed Americans and thousands of unarmed innocent civilians. Oh and to Amaya’s point, their SCOTUS Judges lied under oath at their confirmation hearings just so they could get them on the bench to do the things like reversing Roe Vs Wade and the Voting Rights Act the MAGA SCOTUS’s lied and said they were precedent and would not attempt to reverse them- But they very much did! Liars! Haters and Criminals now control the highest court in the land and do the Convicted Orange Felon’s bidding for him with sheer ignorance and glee!

I sure will ! You should drink a cup of coffee, wake up and read a history book perhaps one that details Hitler’s rise and fall? Or maybe Mussolini’s? Saddam’s? Ceaușescu‘s, Putin’s (Your pal Trump’s pal) or any number of tyrants (dealers choice and I choose Hitler) who have done exactly what Trump and MAGA are attempting to do on behalf of Putin. While you’re at it look up the definitions for-
        Tyrant/Tyranny
        Fascist
        Racist
        Criminal
        Grifter
        Draft Dodger
        Convicted Felon
        Sex Offender
I think you just might learn how applicable those words are to Trump and those behind the MAGA money making country busting, democracy hating machine.

Funny how you enjoy YOUR Rights and Freedoms but back the criminal and party stripping Rights and Freedoms from everyone they deem unworthy of being a fellow MAGA criminal?

Also quite funny how every ex MAGA loyalist King Donny Boy has ousted from the party (for being faithful to the Constitution and Rule of Law over Fealty to a Convicted Felon Sex Offender) takes 30-45% of the MAGA vote with them and King Numbnuts is too ignorant to see it! 🤣 Good luck in November Wishy Washy!

Name the false and incorrect ideas I have about Democracy, The Constitution, Rule of Law and the crimes I have called out. Name one! You should learn to respect those who fought for your rights and freedoms not just those who died so you could have them. That includes the thousands upon thousands of ethnic minorities and women who have served and or fought and died for this country since its very inception. Yes, there were Women, Muslims, Jews, Hindu’s Asians and Blacks who came here as “pilgrims” (well mostly slaves of Pilgrims) and fought to steal it from it’s rightful owners and inhabitants and built it into a world’s Superpower and its greatest Democracy (up until MAGA).

Now if you get your scripture from the Trump or Klan Bible or your news from Russian Propaganda channels like RT, Newsmax and Fox you’re probably not going to find what I tasked you with so don’t bother unless you’re willing to actually learn something real, factual and scientifically proven to be correct from a legitimate source, because you’re not going to find those things from Russian propaganda. Only lies and propaganda!

Thought MAGA and Trump we’re all about
        A) Resolving Ukraine on Day 1 🤮
        B) Fixing the economy, lowering fuel and grocery costs also on day 1 🤮
        C) Releasing the Epstein Files in full/unredacted 🤮
        D) No More Foreign Wars/Entanglements (unless they are apparently as illegal as Nixon carpet bombing Laos and Cambodia)🤮
        E) Draining the SWAMP rather than stocking it with convicted felons and billionaire grifters! 🤮

The White House Intervened to Get a $620 Million Deal for a Company Tied to Donald Trump Jr.

About three months before the Pentagon announced plans to lend money to Vulcan Elements, Trump Jr.’s venture capital firm took an undisclosed stake in the company.

What an honest lot of criminals you blindly support! Keeping wealthy white people free to do illegal things while they make themselves wealthier than they already were. It’s all good until they find something about you or your Family to go after and make illegal or get YOU deported right mate?

      Amaya.

The breeze by the Verde River hushes my random bursts of tears. Yes, grief. I am not a privileged white woman, although my mom was growing up and I have “passed.” My view is certainly different than yours, but we are both still grieving the loss of something really fundamental about our country.

We’ve been at war abroad since 2001 and the online Civil War since about 2012.

Internal peace never comes from brushing over the bad, ugly parts and demanding conformity (MAGA). You have to stare the monsters of racism, sexual or domestic violence, or poverty down until they suffocate.

It’s messy work at first, especially for white or white-treated women. You won’t be perfect. You may get verbally slapped. I have. It’s my badge of honor from marching with black folks in Phoenix.

They keep telling me, it’s ok to not be ok. I miss the old me. The old US. My coming of age was in the booming nineties, so maybe that’s my nostalgia.

“We’ve been at war abroad since 2001 and the online Civil War since about 2012“

      Juliette-
great posting! One little note though, this country has always been in a civil war for the rights of one peoples or another because there has been a never ending battle between the haves and have nots. The most recent civil strife began during the years of Ronnie Raygun and his war mongering for profit administration. It is true that the online war is a more recent advent but it too has some very old roots.
When we have a government that feels Fascism is great and lawful while declaring anti Fascism Domestic terrorism. Go figure that one out. Women’s and minority rights will always be under attack so long as those in power and have the bulk of the national wealth in their pockets and are supported by true Domestic Terrorist who focus upon making themselves and one another wealthy and beyond the grasp of lawfulness and constitutionality. Their weapon of choice? A distorted fictional view of the Bible and religions in general. Those at the top who have zero understanding of true faith and religion have found that running the country like a televangelist running a for bigly profit mega church based upon hatred, lies and fear mongering have found their madness methods to be most profitable. And history tells us that religious zealots even pseudo religious zealots are the most violent and dangerous people on earth. Just ask the Palestinians, Black Americans or Native Americans.

Keep on keeping on! Don’t let lies, corruption, conspiracy and hatred become the norm in our country!

Thank you Amaya that means a lot. I’ve done my best to combat tyranny, terrorism, racism, fascism and corruption my entire adult life both overseas and here at home. Most people haven’t a clue as to the white supremacist threat we have living right here in and among us until another Tim McVeigh blows up another Federal Building full of men, women and their infant children that were in the buildings day care. Or a bank is robbed for a big score by “very organized” criminals. There are other threats but White Supremacy has always been the most violent domestic threat we’ve ever had.
There’s more to what is currently going on in our sad sack country these days and nearly all of it is based upon greed, outright corruption and contempt for the rule of law and democratic values.
One only need look at the criminal tyrant the Great Leader thinks are better people than our career intelligence and military personnel who dedicated their lives to keeping this country free and safe. He likes that they are self proclaimed tough guys who take and do whatever they want because that has always been his aspiration in life- to get his and everyone else be damned!
Thank you for being a kind, aware and humane neighbor in this very tiny world. Keep up the good work. We will survive this nightmare called MAGA and return to being a nation of the people and for the people rather than being a nation of a few wealthy criminals wreaking havoc upon democracy and humanity so they can rob it blind!
