Sedona AZ — The Sedona Heritage Museum will commemorate National Day of the Cowboy on Saturday, July 25, with a special screening of the 1953 western film “Gun Fury.” The screening will take place at Mary D. Fisher Theatre at 3 pm.
“Gun Fury” follows the story of Ben Warren (played by Rock Hudson) who tracks down outlaw Frank Slayton (Philip Carey) after Slayton shot him and kidnapped his fiancée, Jennifer Ballard (Donna Reed).
Most of the film was shot in and around Sedona over the course of 19 days. Hudson took meticulous notes of every shooting location each day. Cast members would later recall the many rattlesnakes they encountered during filming.
The film was notable not just for its cast, which included Lee Marvin who won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1964, but because it was shot in 3-D. For a brief time in the 1950s, studios experimented with 3-D to draw people back to theaters and away from their new televisions. “Gun Fury” featured several action shots in 3-D as well as Sedona’s majestic Red Rocks.
Prior to the screening, local film historians John Conway and Clancy Sage will share stories around the filming of “Gun Fury” in Sedona.
