    logo_ksbSedona AZ (November 5Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc., will hold a special Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 pm, featuring John Purkis, who will speak about the value sustainability can offer to our lives in view of the social and economic challenges facing us. Please note that in order to reach certain community members, the event will be held on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

    photo_johnpurkisCan you imagine a future in which Sedona’s businesses, community groups, local government and residents thrive within Nature’s limits?

    During this engaging and interactive session, Purkis will briefly explore the environmental, social and economic challenges facing the world today and how a systemic approach to strategic thinking can foster a method for crafting pathways to long-term success to embrace a sustainable future. We will learn the benefits of developing a common language for sustainability as well as how other cities and towns are planning differently and working with community partners to address the complicated challenges we face.

    John Purkis is a sustainability expert, facilitator and systems change specialist with over 15 years of experience. He works with municipal governments, businesses and other organizations to generate and implement bold visions for a sustainable future. Through his work with The Natural Step, a world renowned non-profit organization based in Canada, he facilitates transformational processes with organizations around the world ranging from transforming the housing system in the Greater Toronto Area to long-term planning with The British Virgin Islands and many more. Prior to joining The Natural Step, John worked with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, where he helped lay the foundation for the Green Municipal Fund, which is a multimillion dollar infrastructure fund for cities and towns in Canada.

    John holds a BSc in Environmental Science from Brock University and a graduate degree in business from Concordia University in Montreal. He currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario and enjoys woodworking, biking, cross-country skiing and photography. He is currently visiting Sedona for a week of biking and relaxation.

    Keep Sedona Beautiful welcomes the community and visitors alike to its monthly Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series, which takes place at its historic Pushmataha Center on 360 Brewer Road in Sedona.

    Regularly held the second Wednesday of each month from September to June, KSB’s Speaker Series presents an interesting diversity of programs relevant to the unique environment of our region.       The Natural Step is not based in Canada as it says here. There is a national office in Canada, but the international secretariat is in the UK. And of course, it all started in Sweden…

    Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
