Please note that in order to reach certain community members, the event will be held on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

photo_johnpurkisCan you imagine a future in which Sedona’s businesses, community groups, local government and residents thrive within Nature’s limits?

During this engaging and interactive session, Purkis will briefly explore the environmental, social and economic challenges facing the world today and how a systemic approach to strategic thinking can foster a method for crafting pathways to long-term success to embrace a sustainable future. We will learn the benefits of developing a common language for sustainability as well as how other cities and towns are planning differently and working with community partners to address the complicated challenges we face.

John Purkis is a sustainability expert, facilitator and systems change specialist with over 15 years of experience. He works with municipal governments, businesses and other organizations to generate and implement bold visions for a sustainable future. Through his work with The Natural Step, a world renowned non-profit organization based in Canada, he facilitates transformational processes with organizations around the world ranging from transforming the housing system in the Greater Toronto Area to long-term planning with The British Virgin Islands and many more. Prior to joining The Natural Step, John worked with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, where he helped lay the foundation for the Green Municipal Fund, which is a multimillion dollar infrastructure fund for cities and towns in Canada.

John holds a BSc in Environmental Science from Brock University and a graduate degree in business from Concordia University in Montreal. He currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario and enjoys woodworking, biking, cross-country skiing and photography. He is currently visiting Sedona for a week of biking and relaxation.

The evening includes complimentary appetizers donated by El Rincon Restaurante Mexicano and refreshments provided by Keep Sedona Beautiful (KSB).

Keep Sedona Beautiful welcomes the community and visitors alike to its monthly Preserving the Wonder™ Speaker Series, which takes place at its historic Pushmataha Center on 360 Brewer Road in Sedona.

Regularly held the second Wednesday of each month from September to June, KSB’s Speaker Series presents an interesting diversity of programs relevant to the unique environment of our region. The Natural Step is not based in Canada as it says here. There is a national office in Canada, but the international secretariat is in the UK. And of course, it all started in Sweden…

Sedona Home Rule vote ballot illustration
If you recently moved to Sedona, you may notice that every four years, residents vote on something called Home Rule. The July 21 vote is simply about who controls Sedona’s city budget.

Home Rule allows the city government, Staff with limitations, and Council to spend any money they have on any project they want without regard to voter input.
