The Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley, located at 100 Meadowlark Drive off Route 179 in Sedona, is a welcoming, egalitarian, inclusive congregation dedicated to building a link from the past to the future by providing religious, educational, social and cultural experiences.

The JCSVV offers soul-enriching services, programs, and classes, all listed on the synagogue website, jcsvv.org. Office telephone: 928 204-1286. Visitors are welcome to attend services after a security check. Those who cannot attend in person can access the service through zoom.

All are invited to Friday evening services led by Rabbi Magal on November 21 at 5:30 pm. Join in singing songs to usher in the Sabbath, prayers of healing for loved ones, congratulations for those celebrating a birthday or anniversary, and Kaddish, the Mourner’s prayer in memory of those who have passed away recently or around this date in past years.  The weekly Torah portion is Toldot (Genesis 25:19 – 28:9) telling of the birth of twins, Jacob and Esau, to Rebecca and Isaac.  The twins struggle throughout their youth. Jacob gains the birthright and blessing from their father in ways that infuriate Esau. Jacob flees to his mother’s hometown where he will fall in love with Rachel.  Kiddush and Motzi (blessings over the wine/juice and challah) and socializing follow the service.

The Interfaith Thanksgiving will be held at the Church of the Red Rocks on Tuesday, November 25 at 7 pm. The theme this year is “The Heart of Gratitude.” Enjoy meeting people from many local congregations, sing hymns of thanksgiving, and enjoy pumpkin pie and socializing afterward. Please bring canned or packaged goods to donate to the Sedona Food pantry.

Egalitarian, participatory Morning Minyan meets on zoom every Wednesday at 8:30 am with traditional morning blessings, healing prayers, and Kaddish, the mourner’s prayer. Come be counted in our minyan!  Link on the website

Meditation class, led by Rosalie Malter and Rabbi Magal, will meet on Wednesday, November 26, at 4:00 pm on zoom, focusing on sacred seasons or texts to add a deeper dimension to our encounter with Jewish traditional teachings.

Because of Thanksgiving there will not be a Torah study session on Thursday, November 27. Study materials on Vayeitzei will be sent out to the group.

Vayetzei is found in Genesis 28:10 – 32:3 and tells of Jacob’s escape from his brother Esau. On Jacob’s second night of travels he dreams of angels ascending and descending. He awakes with a sense of hope. At the well outside the town of Haran he meets Rachel and falls in love with her.  He works for his father-in-law Laban for seven years, is deceived into marrying the elder sister Leah, and then after promising to work for another seven years, is allowed to marry his beloved Rachel.  After twenty years he is ready to leave with his wives, children, and flocks, return to his home, confront his brother, and hopefully to make peace.

Deli orders can be made online for Deli Day, Dec. 11. Sign up to buy delicious deli sandwiches for you, your friends, or your business co-workers. All details on the website. Scroll down on the home page to “Coming Soon.”

The Social Action Committee is collecting non-perishable foods, as well as infant formula and feminine hygiene products, for the local Sedona food pantry.  Please drop off your donations in the bin provided for collections located at the bottom of the stairs in the parking lot.

We wish all our members, guests, and neighbors a sense of wholeness and peace, included in the word Shalom.
