The Sedona Heritage Museum kicks off its fall Sedona Stories speaker program with Barbara A. McCabe, the Apache Cultural Resource Specialist for the Yavapai Apache Nation. Barbara will speak in the historic Apple Shed at 10 am on Thursday, October 9.
Barbara is of the Apache Clan k’aib taa ilnago’tela the Willow People clan and born for Hanahdi’ nnee. She was born on the San Carlos Indian Reservation on May 27, 1943, at the San Carlos Indian Hospital. She is an enrolled member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. She has ancestry on her maternal grandfather’s mother’s side back to Clarkdale, AZ.
Barbara’s great grandmother’s family were Tonto Apache from east of Payson. Barbara was raised in the old Apache way of life by her grandparents in San Carlos. All that she knows today as an Apache woman is by the way she grew up living the Apache way of life and the stories or events she shared with people. She attended grade school at San Carlos, junior high in Globe, and went to high school at the Phoenix Indian School before receiving her degree from Window Rock High School on the Navajo Reservation.
Her guiding light is the advice she received from her grandfather when she was very young: never forget who you are and where you come from, and don’t forget your language. In her work for YAN she promotes and encourages tribal members to take the time to learn their language and cultural teachings.
Sedona Stories is a monthly program of the Sedona Heritage Museum. It is held at 10 am on the second Thursday of every month.
