The 3/4-acre Tranquil Community Garden is in the center of West Sedona

Sedona AZ (February 15, 2012) – The Sedona City Council just gave permission for public use of land on Tranquil Lane, which had been zoned for private use. Now, the Verde Food Council, Gardens for Humanity and other community partners can proceed with creating a 3/4-acre community garden on the property, which is owned by the Christ Center Wesleyan Church.

The Tranquil Community Garden may be part of a multi-faceted project, which will contribute greatly to Sedona becoming a more sustainable community. Want to know the “inside story” on this important community innovation?

Come hear Debra Emmanuelle, Executive Director of the Verde Food Council, talk about “Cultivating Sustainable Communities: A Re-visioning of Local Food Systems, Health and Community Values” on Thursday, February 16, from 12:30 – 2:00 at Lunch and Learn, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Keynote Speaker program, in room 34 of Yavapai College’s Sedona campus (on Cultural Park Road, across Rte 89A from Red Rock High School).

Lunch & Learn is a “town square” for local residents to gather, chat, and interact with speakers who do interesting and important things in town. This enjoyable, informative, weekly community event is free and open to all!

Bring your lunch (or come for complimentary coffee, tea, water, and a little snack) and join the conversation at 12:30, or come from 1:00 – 2:00 to learn about on how Sedona might foster a sustainable local economy, renewable energy use, and local food production and distribution.

OLLI is a local, volunteer, peer-to-peer, adult education program that offers many learning groups and workshops each term for a nominal fee. Several Winter term workshops are still available. For more information about OLLI or the Lunch & Learn program, please call: 928-649-4275.

The Sad Lesson of Tyre Nichols
    By Tommy Acosta
Having grown up in the mean streets of the Bronx there is one lesson we learn early on, and that’s don’t mess with the cops when they got you down, and outnumbered. The beating of Tyre Nichols at the hands of the police preceding his death at the hospital could have been avoided if only he had the sense to not resist them. People fail to understand that on the streets, cops are basically “God.” You can’t fight them. If it takes one, two, five, ten or twenty officers they will eventually put you down and hurt you if they have to in the process of detaining or arresting you. In the Bronx we would fight amongst ourselves but when the cops came it was “Yes, officer. No, officer,” and do our best to look as innocent as possible. People need to understand that cops on the street represent the full power of the state and government. Read more→
