US National Forest ServiceFlagstaff AZ (December 9, 2020) – The City of Flagstaff will host a firewood giveaway in partnership with the Coconino National Forest starting this weekend.

Wood that has been cleared as part of the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – or until all wood is claimed – on December 12 and 13.

The giveaway will be held at the Schultz Pass Staging Area, located at the junction of Forest Road (FR) 556 and FR 420. The giveaway area can only be accessed by the entrance directly across from FR 556, and vehicles must exit out of the east end of the staging area.

About 100 cords of cured mixed conifer firewood – a combination of spruce/ fir and pine – will be available. The wood has been processed into firewood-sized logs ranging from 12 to 18 inches long, split 4 to 6 inches wide.

Permits will be available on site, and there is no need to contact the City of Flagstaff or Coconino National Forest prior. Trailers are not allowed, and all wood must be self-loaded into vehicles. Firewood is for personal use only and cannot be re-sold. There is no limit on the amount of wood that each participant can claim, and the giveaway is open to the general public, including those who live outside of Coconino County. However, wood is expected to go quickly, and the giveaway will end once all wood is claimed and collected.

Those who arrive at the staging area to claim wood are asked not to climb on wood piles or log decks for safety purposes. Children are asked to remain in vehicles while at the site, and the site will be closed to the general public outside of giveaway hours.

This giveaway is expected to be the first of many. The City of Flagstaff plans to host more giveaways – dependent on weather – until all the firewood is gone.

    Understanding Sedona’s Home Rule Vote

If you recently moved to Sedona, you may notice that every four years, residents vote on something called Home Rule. The July 21 vote is simply about who controls Sedona’s city budget.

    No Home Rule

Home Rule allows the city government, Staff with limitations, and Council to spend any money they have on any project they want without regard to voter input.
