Cornville AZ (September 18, 2020) – On September 16, 2020, utilizing grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, a YCSO deputy conducted traffic enforcement along a stretch of Cornville Road outside of the Cornville community area. In the past few months, there have been several serious collisions along this section of roadway. During the morning commute over a 3-hour time span, the deputy completed 5 traffic stops with each driver receiving a speeding citation. Out of the 5 citations written, the high speed was 76 MPH and the average speed violation was more than 18 MPH over the posted speed limit. The target patrol area covered a section of Cornville Road in a 50 MPH speed limit zone.
As the deputy was returning to Prescott, he observed a vehicle driving 90 mph on Highway 169 while passing another vehicle. The violator vehicle was passing westbound traffic and nearly caused a collision with eastbound traffic during her passing maneuver. She was issued a criminal speed citation for Exceeding 86 MPH. The section of road has also been the scene of several serious and sometimes fatal collisions.
The focused traffic enforcement was in conjunction with the Verde Valley Task Force which enforces speeding violations in high traffic and high complaint areas around the Verde Valley. During some of the enforcement operations, the task force will include the Department of Public Safety, Camp Verde Marshalls Office, along with the Cottonwood and Sedona Police Departments.
