… during the fall as the sun swings south the illumination that the morning sun splashes across the red rocks is nothing short of magnificent … it helps to have a few low level clouds thrown in for good measure  and voila, you have the magic of Sedona.

I took this shot late morning on the 22nd of November last fall. Cloud base was touching to only a few hundred feet above the rim and presented wonderful opportunities  to get shots from above the clouds as well as these which were at about cloud base. There is magic in shots where you get portions of the red rocks of Sedona through the clouds as well as the grander shots like this one where you get the larger scene.

Starting in the lower left of the photo and working our way clockwise around the image we start with with Castle Rock on the N side of the Village and follow its ridge line up to Airport Mesa and the Sedona Airport, above that is Thunder Mountain and beyond that on the horizon is the rim of the Colorado Plateau, but intervening and not seen is Long Canyon. Moving to the right is Wilson mountain and then Oak Creek Canyon which travels north behind Wilson and along with Munds Canyon empties into the Sedona area. Although you can not see it in this shot, Oak Creek comes down from behind Wilson too, makes a turn and runs along the base of Airport Mesa as it wends its way down to the confluence with the Verde River. Just below Wilson Mountain is the Chapel area and the Church of the Holy Cross is just at the base of the rock formation lit up on the top.The mountain ridge running to the right under the clouds is Munds Mountain, which after passing a gap, becomes Lees Mountain …. cutting sharply to the left is Courthouse Rock and then our special Bell Rock. In the lower right corner is the parking lot for the Bell Rock Trail and just below that is SR 179 wending its way to the north through all this beautiful red rock country we call home.

I’ll be adding this photo to my website sometime tomorrow … other plans I had with one of my suppliers didn’t work out so I am filling out the portfolio on my own website as I get the time.

Have a beautiful day … beauty is everywhere and so are beautiful people … they just do not make the news.

    Ted

I am the dawn, the whisper of winds, the perfume
    of morning.

The passing night fondled me, hovering close to me,
    softly, silently.

The breaking day builds the spirit temple of my joy.
    I abandon myself!

It seems to me that never before have I walked with
the spirit as now, nor overcome space, time, and the
elements as I overcome them now.

A bird flies through the sky, and I fly with it. I am in
each pearl of moisture sparkling in the sun. I lie lazy
on the clouds. And I acknowledge my kinship with
    each winged thing.

Peace lies over the world and over the world of my soul.

    If I Were Curtis Sliwa
    By Tommy Acosta

One of my guilty little pleasures is imagining what I would do if I was in someone else’s shoes, especially politicians. In this essay I would love to jump into the shoes of Curtis Sliwa, a former New York City vigilante who founded the Guardian Angels and is now running as a Republican for mayor of his city.
