logo_inspirationofsedonaSedona AZ (March 2, 2016) – On Thursday, March 10th, at 6:30 PM, The Inspiration of Sedona will present the Arizona premiere of Racing to Zero: In Pursuit of Zero Waste. This will be followed by a discussion with Sedona Mayor, Sandy Moriarty, original co-founder of Sedona Recycles, David Jakim, head of the City of Sedona Green Team, and Jean Turocy, Education and Outreach Coordinator of Sedona Recycles, (www.sedonarecycles.org).

Only one third of the waste in the United States is recycled or composted. Why? Industry, through its practice of planned obsolescence, plays a major role; our lives are almost totally dependent on un-recyclable petroleum products. In order to reach zero waste, we need to change our relationship to garbage and view the things we discard as resources rather than waste.

20160302_inspirationRACING TO ZERO examines today’s cultural garbage practices in terms of consumption, preparation, use and production, and discovers some amazing solutions in San Francisco, which is successfully taking the necessary steps to reach zero waste.

Three years ago the mayor of San Francisco pledged to achieve zero waste by 2020. Racing to Zero tracks San Francisco’s waste stream diversion tactics and presents innovative new solutions to waste. This film documents a surprising, engaging and inspiring race to zero. See trailer at: racingtozero.com.

The film will be followed by a discussion with one of the original co-founders of Sedona Recycles, and current city of Sedona Mayor, Sandy Moriarty, David Jakim, head of the City of Sedona Green Team, and Sedona Recycles’ Education and Outreach Coordinator, Jean Turocy, who are all passionate about helping Sedona residents learn to recycle more of their waste. The film and discussion come to Sedona at a time when new residential trash and recycling services are being considered.

Currently, Sedona City residents and homeowner’s associations contract with one of three private haulers. The hauler, type of service, and cost vary from neighbor to neighbor. The Sedona City Council recently directed City staff to evaluate the feasibility to change from the current system to the City contracting with a private hauler to provide a City-wide residential trash and recycling program.

The City is seeking input from the community on the current and future residential trash and recycling program. The City has met one-on-one with each of the current haulers. The City has also facilitated public meetings and focus groups to provide residents opportunities to participate in determining the City’s future residential trash and recycling program. Once the vendor and public input process has been completed, staff will return to the City Council to present the findings of the public input and ask Council for further direction. Staff is currently planning to present to the City Council at an open, public, special meeting, on March 23rd. Read the 2-page City of Sedona Residential Trash/Recycling Fact Sheet, which includes Myths and Facts about City-wide programs, at http://www.sedonaaz.gov/home/showdocument?id=28462.

The Inspiration of Sedona meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. It is an open meeting group, that strives to work together collectively for the betterment of ourselves, our communities, and the world. Its current format involves showing inspiring and personally empowering documentaries about the social and environmental issues we’re collectively facing, followed by interactive discussion.

Please be a part of the inspiration by joining us on March 10th, at 6:30 PM, downstairs at the Church of the Red Rocks, to watch Racing to Zero, meet and talk with Mayor Sandy Moriarty, David Jakim, and Jean Turocy, and discover together ways to live lighter on our planet. For more info:
