Arizona Department of TransporationSedona News – The Arizona Department of Transportation is preparing to start long-awaited improvements on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon after the Arizona State Transportation Board awarded a construction contract to proceed with the project at its Feb. 18, meeting.

SR 89A Oak Creek Canyon ImprovementThe improvements include:

    • Rockfall Mitigation
    • Drainage & Sediment Control
    • Pumphouse Wash Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction is expected to begin early this spring and anticipated to be completed in fall 2023.

ADOT invites you to attend a live virtual public information meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, to learn more about the planned improvements and ask questions. More details on the public meeting will be provided in the coming days.

With the exception of limited daytime and overnight closures, SR 89A will remain open to traffic. Traffic restrictions using a combination of temporary traffic signals and/or flagging operations will be in place while the improvements are under construction. The roadway will be narrowed to one lane only through the work zone(s) with alternating north- and southbound travel. ADOT is committed to completing the improvements as quickly as possible, while balancing the transportation and access needs of local and nearby communities.

Roadside message boards will notify the traveling public in advance of full closures.

Initially, the three improvements were going to be completed at different times by two different contractors, but all the work will now be completed by one contractor. This helps address increasing construction costs, the challenges of working on a narrow-and-winding canyon road and the complexity of the work. It will also help better coordinate traffic impacts required to complete the work.

    The Symbolism of Jan. 6

    By Tommy Acosta
Don’t mess with symbols. Just ask author Dan Brown’s character Robert Landon. The worth of symbols cannot be measured. Symbols make the world-go-round. Symbols carry the weight of a thousand words and meanings. Symbols represent reality boiled down to the bone. Symbols evoke profound emotions and memories—at a very primal level of our being—often without our making rational or conscious connections. They fuel our imagination. Symbols enable us to access aspects of our existence that cannot be accessed in any other way. Symbols are used in all facets of human endeavor. One can only feel sorry for those who cannot comprehend the government’s response to the breech of the capital on January 6, with many, even pundits, claiming it was only a peaceful occupation. Regardless if one sees January 6 as a full-scale riot/insurrection or simply patriotic Americans demonstrating as is their right, the fact is the individuals involved went against a symbol, and this could not be allowed or go unpunished.
