logo_sedonarangerSedona AZ (August 12, 2013) – The City of Sedona Volunteer Park Rangers are looking for a few dedicated people to help expand the Park Ranger program.

The rangers, in their familiar green and tan uniforms with western hat, work year around providing assistance to visitors, helping at community events and supporting the city’s parks & recreation program.

Since the program began in 2007, rangers have contributed nearly 14,000 hours of community service.

According to program manager Bob Huggins, “We would love to expand our community outreach to include regularly scheduled guided hikes, a junior ranger program and summer activities for our youth.” Currently there are 11 rangers, several of whom have been with the program since it started. Huggins would like to expand that number to 15. “If we were at full capacity, we could increase our visitor service coverage in the Main Street district while offering a wider variety of educational and interpretive services to Sedona residents,” Huggins said.

According to City Parks & Recreation Manager Rachel Murdoch, “The park rangers play an important role in our community and our parks and recreation programs. We fully support their efforts to increase educational and recreational opportunities for our residents, something that we can’t currently do on our own with our limited staff.”

The all-volunteer ranger program was approved by the City Council in 2005 and is managed under the Department of Parks & Recreation.

Potential volunteer rangers are required to be fingerprinted, pass a background check and are required to provide a minimum number of hours. Uniforms and training are provided at no cost to the volunteer.

For more information about the program, pick up an information packet at the Department of Parks & Recreation office at Sedona City Hall, 102 Roadrunner Drive.
